Officially the state of Kentucky is the Commonwealth of Kentucky. On June 1, 1792, Kentucky became the 15th state to join the Union. Kentucky was part of Virginia before becoming a state. The capital is Frankfort, but the largest city is Louisville.

Kentucky's nickname is the "Bluegrass State", based on the fact that this type of grass grows in pastures and lawns across the state. Just to be clear, Bluegrass is actually green -- but in the springtime the bluegrass produces bluish-purple buds that casts off a rich blue color when seen in large fields.

Post-It brand notes are made exclusively in Kentucky in the small town of Cynthiana.

Located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, is the world’s only Corvette assembly plant. The Chevy Corvette, is a sports car manufactured by Chevrolet. The first Vette was built in 1953.

Bowling Green is also home to the National Corvette Museum, where in 2014 a sinkhole opened up in the earth and swallowed nine cars.

The “Happy Birthday” song originated in Louisville in the late 19th century. Patty Hill, a teacher at the Louisville Experimental Kindergarten School, collaborated with her sister Mildred, a piano instructor, on a song called “Good Morning to All” that became a greeting teachers would sing to students. It’s unclear how, exactly, the tune morphed into “Happy Birthday to You,” but today it’s the most recognizable song in the English language.

Held every year since 1875, the Kentucky Derby is the oldest horse race in the United States. The Derby is held on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY. The race is for three-year-old Thoroughbreds. The race track is 1¼ miles long. (about 2 km). The winning horse is draped with a garland of 400 roses, which has sparked another nickname for the race, "The Run for the Roses."

Fort Knox is a United States Army post. It is best known as the site of the United States Bullion Depository. Kentucky safely stores the largest gold reserve in the world. It is estimated that about 8,000 tons of gold is kept at Fort Knox.

The Father of Bluegrass Music is Bill Monroe. Bluegrass music is directly traced back to this Kentuckian and his Blue Grass Boys.

Bluegrass music is a form of country music. It also has been influenced by Irish, Scottish, and English traditional music. Other influencers are jazz and the music of Appalachia.

Bluegrass instruments are usually un-electrified string instruments. A band will usually have the following: a fiddle, 5-string banjo, acoustic bass, guitar, mandolin, and sometimes a Dobro guitar. Typically, Bluegrass is played without drums.
