Official State Cat of Maine

In 1985, the Maine coon cat became the official state cat of Maine. The Maine coon is the largest domestic cat breed and several features have adapted perfectly for Maine's harsh snowy winters. This cat has a water-resistant coat, furry ears, and a bushy tail. The Maine coon cat has big, round, tufted feet that serve as snow shoes. This cat comes in a wide variety of colors.

They rarely meow, but when they do, that soft, tiny voice doesn't fit their physical appearance. Males can weigh from 13 to 18 pounds.

Maine's official nickname is The Pine Tree State, but Maine is commonly referred to as The Lighthouse State. There are 65 historical lighthouses spread out along the 4,500 miles of rocky coastline, inlets, and islands.

Originally lighthouses were built to guide sailors and fishermen safely into the harbors. Each one flashed its own light pattern so sea captains could tell where they were.

Portland, Maine is home to the oldest lighthouse in the states. This lighthouse was commissioned by George Washington in 1791.
