Average film has 3 acts, 10 scenes per act, 3 minutes per scene, 1 1/2 to 3 pages of script per scene.

Formula for shooting a conversation

  1. EST WS - show who's there, location, country, weather, time of day, local culture.

  2. MS - Who's doing the talking?

  3. OS - Where are they looking? Who are they talking to?

  4. CU - Focusing on conversation, character emotion.

  5. ECU - High tension moment, reactions.

  6. WS - Resolution, wrap up the scene.

  2. Shot list

  3. Storyboard

  4. Blocking

  5. Crew

  6. Equipment

Blocking

  1. Doors and windows

  2. Furniture

  3. Actors

  4. Camera positions

  5. Sound positions

  6. Lights + power points

The purpose of the plan is to go with the plan!

Selecting the right crew

When selecting crew, you would request a demo reel and CV from:

  • Producer

  • Director

  • Assistant Director

  • Cinematographer/DP

  • Gaffer

  • Hair, Makeup

  • Wardrobe, Props

  • Script Supervisor

  • Production Sound Manager

  • Editor

Or ask if they have any formal training

Considerations:

  • Do they have a good attitude to work?

  • Can they take direction?

  • Can they think independently?

  • Are they a good communicator?

  • Are they okay with sharing their creativity?

  • Are they good at managing their time?

  • Do they have a positive attitude?

  • Do they respond well to feedback and pressure?

  • What are their strengths and which roles will suit those strengths?
