'Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone'

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,

Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,

Silence the pianos and with muffled drum

Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead

Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,

Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,

Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,

My working week and my Sunday rest,

My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;

I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;

Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;

Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;

For nothing now can ever come to any good.

Semiotic Analysis

The original poem we explored and took inspiration from is named ‘stop all the clocks’ which is a poem that is based on the theme of loss and the emotions experienced by a man who has lost someone he loves. He struggles to come to terms with finding happiness and joy anymore as he feels like there is nothing left to live for now that his lover is not in the world. We chose this poem as grief is an inevitable part of life therefore we wanted to choose a topic that is relatable to everyone. With our remix version we wanted to create a poem that is linked to the theme of grief however is about the problems social media causes and the demands it has on people to stay relevant. The aspect of grief is seen through having to conform into something you're not and to constantly put on a smile to impress others, when the reality of the situation is causing more trouble than good.

Social media has generated a culture of self perception being the most important aspect of an individual. Our poem highlights some of the things that a user of social media is subjected to including only posting the best parts of themselves and never the negatives and learning to cut off social media and to accept yourself as you are without any need to impress others.
