Weekly Reflection

What? So What? Now What?

I was introduced to CIM151 Contemporary Industrial Practices where I will be studying the evolution of the industry over time and where it may go leading forward.

As a class we broke down the definitions of economic, cultural and social context within media. We were split into groups and each group was given one topic each. My group researched economic context. We threw some ideas and definitions together and eventually came up with: "The influences during the creation of media product. Including: production, distribution, ownership and funding."

We also began researching influential people within our respective industries. I have decided to look into Edwin Catmull who is responsible to many 3D software technologies and also co-founded Pixar.

Class Notes - Understanding Context

Economic Context

The influences during the creation of a media product. Including: production, distribution, ownership and funding.

Social Context

The influence on the behaviors of individuals after being exposed to media.

Cultural Context

How large groups of people both influence media creation and how they are influenced by media consumption.

Netflix's Economic Context

Affordability. Less cost over time via a monthly subscription vs renting on a per movie basis; more value for the consumer.

Netflix's Social Context

Binge watching content became normalized. Anyone could stay in their own bedroom and watch whatever they liked.

Netflix's Cultural Context

Better, faster access and higher circulation of content. Less demand for video stores and cinemas. Instant streaming access to most household media devices.
