CIM210 - Week 7-8

2021-11-9

Study break was on week 7 and I mostly focused on my animation class projects but our group found a bit of time to complete our remix before class on week 8. We used the themes of grief in the original poem and transformed and remixed them into a poem about online social media and how it affects people in today's society.

Poem Remix

We recorded some video and Nina did voiceover of the poem and she also edited the video together for final submission.

We presented it to class and received a positive reaction, some people said it had a nice emotional touch.

During the rest of class we discussed what transmedia is and saw some examples of it, such as the Star Wars franchise and how it has used multiple media platforms to gain a massive fanbase and extend it's cultural reach beyond it's films.

Kirstie showed the class a video about a transmedia project called "Rescue Dina Foxx!" which taught the importance of privacy by having viewers look through multiple websites, blogposts and social media accounts which setup the characters and plot for a film that later aired on TV. The film presented a murder case that the viewers had to solve themselves by participating in an ARG (Augmented Reality Game) where they looked for clues on the internet, in geocaches and watched interactive live events streamed through the web.

We also went into breakout rooms to look back at our Project 1 Future Jam synopsis's to prepare for Project 3. My Project 3 group is with Alex, Nina, Lara and Louie.

We plan to meet on Discord at some point later this week to get a start on the project.

Weekly Reflection

What?

Transmedia in my own words:

Transmedia is a form of storytelling that utilises different platforms to tell it's narrative. There is commonly an interactive element however this is not always the case.

So what?

What is a transmedia experience that crosses over to my discipline and how different narrative and media adaptations were used to bring in a broader audience?

Less than a year ago there was an event called Sword Art Online Synthesis -The Period Alicization Project- which celebrated the latest season of the show.

This was an event based on a TV anime series called Sword Art Online where the characters get stuck in a VR MMO game and have to fight their way to the last level to escape. The event was a virtual experience anyone with a PC and VR headset could join using the game VRChat.

They recreated some of the game levels featured in the anime including a boss fight area where you can fight a monster with the help of other players, and a hub world where you can meet people and hangout. In the lobby area there was a massive floating screen showing a live stream which included an orchestral performance featuring music from the anime and also interviews with animation staff and voice actors.

Now what?

What transmedia experiences have I engaged with as an active participant?

I actually participated in the Sword Art Online Synthesis -The Period Alicization Project- event myself. It was a very unique experience walking around in a place that I had only seen in the show but I could now get up close and interact with the world.

There is massive potential for this style of media to grow. Big franchises can keep fans engaged with cool events outside of their normal medium and also bring in new fans in the process.

These kinds of events seem to be more common in Japan than they are in the west but with the continuing adoption of VR tech I think it could become a big part of how we interact with our media.
