My church connects with a lot of volunteer groups, and Feed My Starving Children is an non-profit organization we help organize volunteers for. This month, I had to opportunity to participate with my church group. Our goal was to pack as many bags of food as we can so they could be provided to the malnourished in over 70 countries. After signing up for this event in early January, we met up in an office building in Richardson where their location was at and spent two hours packing bags chock full of rice, soy, dried vegetable, and vitamin powder.
It helped that we had a whole team working on this together-- we were both able to communicate to work efficiently and chat to keep our minds occupied. With four ingredients, we had four hands-- so two people-- measuring and pouring the ingredients into the bags. I was a part of this job, and when the two of us got physically tired of our individual roles, we swapped ingredients. There were two people holding up the bags for us to pour the ingredients to, but one of them-- Emily-- had to occasionally switch over to help the one-person quality assurance team. Finally, there was a bag-sealer, who applied heat to the bag to seal it and then pack them neatly into a box. Through teamwork, we finished at least a few hundred bags of food throughout the two hours. Though it my back was aching and my arms were sore at the end of it, I felt proud of the dozens of bags I had helped pack.
LO6: Hunger is a severe issue throughout the world, and by participating with this non-profit organization, I hope that I am able to help alleviate it, if only just by my humble contribution.
