I host a Creative Writing Club, where we build up writers with confidence. The activity we did on this week was inspired by the wintry Christmas spirit, where we wrote to a winter-inspired prompt for 15 minutes and then read aloud our stories. As the host, I had to clearly communicate the goal and limitations of the activity. Between 4:10 and 4:45, I had a total of 35 minutes for an activity, so after introducing and preparing the activity for 5 minutes, I planned for us to write for 15 minutes and read for 15 minutes, before we left. Because I enjoy being prepared, I investigated the prompt we would use during the privilege period beforehand: "Write about a town made entirely of gingerbread and its inhabitants."
During this activity, I was able to practice my creative writing skills: because I was on a time crunch and I was limited by the writing speed of my hand, I had to be focused with my purpose. At the end, I was able to fit in a single page of writing.
LO7: While I was picking the prompt, our hosting teacher reminded me that I couldn't use any specifically religious terminology in case there were people who didn't celebrate Christmas since it is ultimately a religious holiday. I could make people uneasy. After careful consideration, I chose a prompt that suggested a common custom that wasn't related to any religion: gingerbread baking and decoration.
