Occasionally, my church friend group does a sleepover! We had many planned activities, one of which being an egg-tart making competition. Since we had seven people and not enough ingredients, we split into teams of 2, with the last person being the judge.
A: The aim of the mini-competition was to see who could make the best egg tarts. We would make 6 egg tarts per group, but we all had to find our own unique recipe and carry it out on our own. This would be a team bonding experience, as well as a way for us to learn how to make something most of us have never made before.
C: I had to actively communicate with my partner as we made our egg tart mixture. We had to confer on what recipe we were going to use, as well as check what ingredients were available. Throughout making the mixture, we had to communicate with the home owners if they had certain measuring tools that we needed, and eventually, confer with the other teams on how were were going to use the oven. Since there was only one oven and three sets of unique recipes, we had to agree in what temperatures we were going to use and in what order.
T: We spent about ten minutes to plan what recipe we were going to use and gather all our materials. It was a very worth 10 minutes, since without it, we likely could've clashed with the other groups in terms of the measuring tools we were all using. Our plan was very successful, and while we encountered a few mishaps when we forgot a few steps, it was all alright in the end.
I: During the 10 minutes we had to prepare, we investigated many different recipes, looking into their processes, the tools required, and the ingredients needed to perform them. Thus, when we finally started working on our product, everything happened smoothly, since we had prepared all the ingredients beforehand.
V: Throughout this experience, I was able to learn about the process in making egg tarts. It was actually much easier than I thought it would be! I also got to know my team partner better: he often has many ideas, but some have unintended consequences that he sometimes doesn't think through. I also came to realize that after going through my chemistry IA, I had a much better understanding of fluids, which helped me be more aware of the small things we were doing to our mixture as we made it.
E: I was very engaged during making my first egg tarts. Partially because I was with friends at a sleepover, but there was very little attention diverted to loitering around; my full attention was on my partner and making sure we don't mess something up.
LO1: By partaking in this experience, I realized how much I've learned from doing my chemistry IA. While there is definitely the academic part, there is also life skills; I also realized I was paying more attention and I had more knowledge about the processes of making the dough. I also realized how I didn't know how to use a can opener, to which my friend taught me how.
