VBC, standing for Vacation Bible Camp, is a Christian-centered camp hosted by the DCFC church that offers children an opportunity to learn about the Christian religion as well as volunteers to grow in their faith and leadership capabilities. This year, I was the leader of the Office Team for VBC, and we did a lot of administrative and background work while all the classroom teams took care of the children. I had to successfully organize my team into productivity so that there wasn't any member just sitting around, and since there were newcomers, I had to also teach them their roles and what we were going to do over the week.
Before camp, Office Team always goes to the church to set up various materials that the classroom teams might need, like decoration supplies, games, and more importantly, their binders that had schedules and nametags for both the volunteers and campers. There was a lot to do! I investigated the duties that we'd have this year and made plans accordingly for our team for what we would complete per day.
Throughout the week, there were times when there was nothing to do, and then times when there was an emergency that we had to fix. As the team leader with more years of experience than most of the other volunteers who were younger, many things fell onto me to resolve, and I learned a lot about responsibility throughout the week. I had to stay engaged and involved, always ready to help out, and while it was tiring, I ultimately gained a lot of experience from this camp.
LO4, LO5: I had to guide my teammates, old and new, and organize our work as the Office team. Since there was a lot to be done, I had to delegate a lot of the work; I wouldn't have been able to complete everything on my own at all. The week as also long; the last day was 13 hours long. But, I persevered through the mental and physical strain and successfully completed the VBC week with my helpers without any major disasters.
