Just before the major week-long break in the Fall Semester, the school hosts a half-day where students had the chance to participate in a service opportunity. I helped host in one of these, PB&Joy, where students make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to be redistributed at foodbanks and other nonprofits. For four long hours, I assisted two tables with restocking their peanut butter, jelly, and bread supply as they made sandwiches, as well as brought their completed sandwiches to the bagging table, where they'd be put in plastic bags for sanitary purposes before being stored. When I had spare time, I made a few sandwiches myself, though for most of the time, I was rushing around the room. I communicated with both my tables so that they had clear instructions, as well as with the leaders as we set up the room. I didn't have to do a lot of investigation beforehand because I served a similar role last year, but I still found a lot of value and enjoyment in helping organize this volunteer event.
LO6: The sandwiches that we'd create would be sent to foodbanks and other nonprofits to be redistributed at homeless centers and other locations of poverty. With each sandwich I carried, I tried to think of its significance to its receiver. At the same time, I realized the massive amount of food that we were preparing, and the amount of people who needed this food. Lack of proper sustenance is a global issue.
