During the second week of Winter Break, Abiraami and the officers of Uknity, a club dedicated to making crocheted and knitted goods like scarves and hats for the homeless of the Dallas area, hosted a workshop at the Allen Public Library for the members of Uknity to have a space to be able to chat as they worked together. Since this was my first workshop, and I didn't know how to crochet, I had to learn from Angela how to crochet.
A: To learn how to crochet, as well as practice and crochet hats or scarves in a space where we can all chat together as we crochet and have a fun experience.
C: When Angela was teaching me how to crochet, I had a lot of questions, and had to communicate them to her. This collaboration allowed me to learn the basics of crochetting, so that even without her guidance, I could fix issues that may occur with my creation on my own and without having to ask her.
T: The club leaders of Uknity sent out a notice for the signups for the workshop only a few days before the event occurred, so I had to rush to get materials from Walmart: predominantly, the thread to be used. I bought a few rolls of yarn in preparation for that day's and future projects.
I: I did not do much investigation beforehand, because I knew that the officers there would be giving me in-person guidance to crocheting, and that would be much more efficient and effective than watching a Youtube video about it. Though, I looked into choosing the most comfortable yarn to use for my crocheting adventures. I don't think I needed to investigate anything further than that, and knowing the date and location of the workshop.
V: From going to Uknity's workshop, I was able to learn how to crochet in-person from someone who is much more experienced at crocheting than me. Watching them crochet in action in person was very helpful because as I was getting more used to the movements of crocheting, I was able to remember their movements and the specific techniques that they used to be able to crochet so fast.
E: I felt very engaged in this experience because after Angela finished tutoring me, I was able to join in in the conversation with the rest of the crocheting Uknity members, and as I worked on my new project, I'd talk with them over the random topics like school starting again soon, what was our first week of winter break like, and gossip about school and pretty boys.
LO6: All over the world, there are homeless people who, at winter, do not have the necessary clothing or materials to sustain their own warmth during cold times. Especially in places like Dallas, regions in Australia, or other locations around the world, temperatures can skyrocket to up to 60 degrees Fahrenheit during one winter day, and then plummet to less than 20 degrees Fahrenheit the next. Knowing how difficult it is to sustain one's warmth even with thick coats and hoodies, I've realized it is crucial for homeless to have access to scarves and hats that can help protect their warmth during winter.
