Mrs Burgan and Mrs Daly
I am pleased to inform you that Mrs Daly will return from her maternity leave at the end of June but sadly Mrs Burgan will be leaving us. We look forward to Mrs Daly’s return and wish all the very best to Mrs Burgan, thanking her for all she has given this last year.
Habemus Papam
We give thanks to God as we celebrate the election of Cardinal Robert Prevost to the papacy. He has chosen the name of Leo for his service as pope and this is significant. He comes from a religious order, known as the Augustinians whose charisms are love of God, love of community and love for all people through service and the pursuit of truth. Pope Leo XIV has served in South America and particularly Peru for many years and I’m sure we will find out much more about our new Holy Father in due course.
For now, I want to comment on the Holy Father’s name choice. As soon as it was announced last night, I recognised the name of Leo being significant. His previous namesake, Pope Leo XIII led the church from 1878 to 1903 and his 1891 encyclical Rerum novarum stands out as a foundational document for the Church’s modern social teaching. In the wake of the industrial revolution, Leo XIII spoke to a world which was embroiled in at one extreme, unrestricted capitalism and at the other, atheistic socialism. Pope Leo led the Church to stand up for dignity of workers. It was about the rights and duties of workers and employers and discussed the relationships and mutual duties between labour and capital, as well as government and its citizens.
Today, the Church and its schools have a strong Gospel concern for the poor. Catholic Social Teaching is concerned with human dignity, the common good, participation, subsidiarity, stewardship, solidarity, a preferential option for the poor, distributive justice and promoting peace.
Let us pray for Pope Leo XIV as he begins his ministry for the Kingdom of God.
Food allergies
Please be reminded that some of our children suffer with severe allergic reactions to peanuts, nuts, lentils and peas. If an anaphylactic reaction occurs we are trained to immediately use Jext pens of Epipens and call 999.
Please do not use Nivea suncream as it has almond oil in it and we have children with severe nut allergies.
Please do not send any items containing the above into school for your child’s lunch or snack. This includes spreads like Nutella as it has hazelnut as an ingredient.
Thank you for your support, as always.
