Saint Louis University Retired and Emeritus/a Faculty Policy
Eligibility
Except in extraordinary circumstances, a faculty member must have served the University in a full-time capacity for at least ten years prior to his/her retirement in order to qualify for emeritus/a consideration. Emeritus/a status is limited to those persons who have distinguished themselves while on the faculty and plan to remain professionally active following retirement.
Emeritus/a Faculty Responsibilities
Faculty applying for emeritus/a status are responsible for:
To ensure that the emeritus process is completed and status decision is made prior to retirement from the School, faculty must notify their department chair at least six months in advance of the planned effective retirement date.
Emeritus/a faculty who intend to continue to participate in research must contact the School of Medicine Office of Research (som_research@health.slu.edu) to verify that appropriate authorization is obtained.
Faculty with research space are responsible for the removal of all equipment/supplies and decommissioning of the laboratory prior to the last date of employment. For assistance with clearing of research space, contact the School of Medicine Research Planning and Operations Manager (sandra.cornell@health.slu.edu)
Faculty are responsible for removing all possessions from their office no later than the official retirement date.
On an annual basis, the emeritus/a faculty member is responsible for keeping the Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development updated on their current professional activities.
School of Medicine Responsibilities
On an annual basis, the Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development is responsible for:
Reaching out to emeritus/a faculty to:
Elicit current contact information and professional activities of emeriti/ae;
Encourage emeritus/a to continue to keep the University informed about their professional activities.
Informing departments of the names of the emeritus/a faculty and the privileges afforded to them.
The School of Medicine will provide touchdown office space for emeritus/a faculty (Doisy Research Center, Room 317 and Schwitalla Hall, Room M174). Department or School resources and support may be available to emeritus/a faculty, although first priority will be given to meeting the needs of current faculty.
Retiring faculty with @health.slu.edu email will be given an @slu.edu email. However, those applying for Emeritus/a status will most likely need to retain the @health.slu.edu email, therefore it is strongly encouraged they submit their application at minimum three months prior to their termination date.
