Notes:
The Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development (OFAPD) administers the School of Medicine’s Annual Faculty Reviews.
The Saint Louis University Faculty Manual states that every full-time and part-time faculty member is evaluated annually by the Department Chairperson or comparable administrator.
All faculty covered under the School of Medicine CARTS Allocation Policy are to have an annual evaluation of their CARTS and an opportunity to discuss CART allocation for the coming year.
The yearly evaluation is an opportunity to reset expectations, explore career opportunities and discuss progress towards promotion for junior faculty. Aside from the obvious benefit for faculty career progression and growth, annual review data are important in identifying the School of Medicine faculty body efforts. The collected data informs leadership in its efforts to create and support an environment where the faculty can flourish and be successful in achieving their career goals and maximizing their potential. Additionally, data captured through the review process is used for accreditation purposes, such as ACGME, LCME and Higher Learning Commission reporting.
Annual Review Process
1. In January, the OFAPD verifies a list of current full-time and part-time faculty in all SOM departments as of the end of December.
Below are some clarifications about inclusions/exclusions to the list:
New faculty: Any faculty hired before January 1 will be reviewed in the current cycle. Faculty hired after January 1 will be deferred to the next cycle.
Departing Faculty: If a faculty member is planning to leave SLU, the OFAPD asks that an annual review form is completed before their departure. (If their departure is prior to April 1 they may be unable to complete a review.)
Adjunct Faculty: Any faculty who is Adjunct (i.e. hired on an as needed basis, either paid or unpaid) does not receive a review under this annual process.
2. Department Administrators will schedule review meetings between faculty and their reviewers in April.
All faculty must be reviewed by the last business day in May.
3. At the beginning of April, the OFAPD will send a unique link to each SOM faculty member to complete the online Annual Performance and CARTS Allocations form.
The form includes the current CART allocation for the faculty member. It also includes sections to indicate accomplishments and goals for each effort: Clinical, Administration, Research and Scholarship, Teaching, and Service.
Additionally, faculty provide information pertaining to their professional development, upload a PDF of their current CV (SLU format is preferred), and acknowledge the School of Medicine Code of Conduct.
4. Once faculty complete and submit their form, the information will be immediately routed to their reviewer.
5. Faculty and their reviewer will then meet for a discussion in which they complete and submit the review section of the form. A portion of their discussion will be to determine their CART allocation for the coming year.
6. Upon submission of the form that has been filled out in the review session, faculty will be automatically emailed a final PDF their review. (Note: If the reviewer is not the department chair, faculty will be emailed a final PDF after the chair has signed off on the review.)
