Dear Parents,
On Wednesday this week we celebrated a special whole school liturgy to mark the beginning of Lent. Students, staff and parents were signed with ashes on their foreheads, and reminded to “remember that God loves you”. This was a powerful message reminding us of God’s unwavering love for us. Our Religious Education Leader, Zeeta Andrew, also reminded us about the importance of always striving to be the people that Jesus calls us to be; caring, compassionate, merciful and forgiving.
Today St. Joachim’s Staff participated in important professional learning about the Year of Jubilee, specifically focusing on the theme “Pilgrims of Hope”. The theme of hope is an important focus, as part of the Church’s mission through Catholic schools, is to inspire hope in our students through the integration of faith, life and culture. It is our role in Catholic education to provide all students, staff and families opportunities to see that our hope is sustained by our faith in God.
Thank you to Fr. Martin for leading our Year 3 students and parents through preparations to receive the sacrament of First Reconciliation last night. The actual sacrament celebration day is on Saturday 31st May at 3:00 p.m. at St. Anne’s Church.
Best wishes to our Year 3 and Year 5 students as they sit the NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy And Numeracy) tests on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week. Students will sit tests in writing, reading, language conventions and numeracy. Thank you to staff who have been preparing our students for this.
I look forward to welcoming two new parent members to our School Advisory Council this year. Welcome to Louise Miller (mum to Olivia JSE) and to Leanne Johnson (mum to Ava JSE). Our next SAC meeting will be held at school at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday 19th March.
Catholic Education Week begins on Sunday 16th March and runs until Sunday 23rd March. Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne to celebrate their Catholic identity, the pivotal role they play within their local community and the strength of the sector. The theme for Catholic Education Week 2025 is ‘Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you (Is 60: 1)' which draws from the motto of the Holy Year, the Year of Jubilee, and the Australian Catholic Youth Festival’s theme – ‘Pilgrims of Hope’.
Please note the dates of forthcoming events:
Monday 17th March - St. Patricks’ Day- (Thank you to our P & F for organising green jelly for students on this day)
Friday 21st March – Outdoor movie night (organized buy our wonderful P & F)
Monday 24th March – St. Joachim’s Athletics Sports afternoon (2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.) NB: Students will also participate in tabloid sports activities at school before the athletics event, so all students need to wear sports unform on this day.
A reminder that the school will be closed for the Labour Day public holiday on Monday 10th March. School will resume at the usual time next Tuesday. As we embrace some cooler weather at the start of Autumn I wish all students, staff and families a restful long weekend.
Regards,
Paul Dwyer, Principal
Parents may open the gate and drive their cars into the school grounds at 2:30pm as long as there are no classes playing / working on the asphalt. The car park is a part of the play ground and includes basketball court and volleyball court which needs to be available should a teacher wish to use this with her / his class.

There are many opportunities and ways for our parents to communicate with us.
For communication to be successful and timely, it is important that it is directed toward the correct person.
If at any time you have a concern about your child, the first person to contact is your child's classroom teacher. They work very closely with your child on a daily basis and know them the best. Teachers can be contacted via phone or email. Phone calls are often difficult to put through or return, so the best option is email. As teachers are busy teaching our children during the day, emails will generally be replied to within a 48 hour period. It is in these emails that you can express any concerns or clarifications you may have, or make a time to meet face to face.
If something is of an urgent matter, like change of pickup time, please do not email this information as it maybe too late by the time our teachers read this email. Please ring the school office and we will pass the message on to ensure your child is informed.
Sometimes there are bigger concerns families have that may not need to involve the classroom teacher, but leadership at the school.
Parents are welcome to contact myself via email at any time or phone, where I can help and support any concerns or queries you may have. We value what our families have to share and require, and we will try our best to support families with this.
Enrolments for our 2026 Foundation is open and filling fast.
If current families have children they wish to attend St Joachim's for Foundation in 2026, would you please go to the St Joachim's website and follow the links. We want to guarantee your child a spot at the school before we begin accepting other families.

This week, we started off our Lenten journey by celebrating Shrove Tuesday, a tradition where people would use up all the fats in their homes before the fasting period leading up to Easter. The children had a great time enjoying pancakes with their teachers and classmates!
On Wednesday, we entered the season of Lent with Ash Wednesday Liturgy, marking the occasion with the blessing and distribution of ashes. Over the next six weeks, we are given a unique opportunity to deepen our relationship with God, reflect on our actions and shortcomings, engage in more heartfelt prayer, and show generosity to those in need. We pray that the Spirit will guide us as we strive to strengthen our commitment to the life that Jesus modeled.
At our whole school Ash Wednesday Liturgy, the students who form our Mini Vinnies Team as part of the St Vincent de Paul, Seaford Conference were commissioned and received their badges. The aim of Mini Vinnies is to empower primary school students to become advocates within our school and local community by putting their values into action. The children were presented with badges to recognise their commitment to help others both locally and globally.
Congratulations to Milla, Gurshan, Gabrielle, Sienna, Nixon, Constance, Lucy, Christine, Victoria, Dante, Zak, Aria, Shevon, Addison, Jaxon and Nysa on their commitment to join Mini Vinnies.
The Mini Vinnies aim to serve Jesus by offering “a hand up” to people in need and poor. They do this with love, joy, and by respecting their dignity, working towards making our world more loving and just.
The Mini Vinnies follow the ‘Think, See, Do’ model, reflecting and discussing their spirituality and connecting their faith with issues affecting their community through volunteering, advocacy and fundraising. Not only do the students in Mini Vinnies benefit from the experience, but also the school and wider community benefit. This has been shown by all the great work done by our Mini Vinnies over the past few years.
To care deeply for the needs of another person or creature is an expression of our love for them. This tender concern is called ‘compassion’. We show compassion each year, through our efforts to raise funds for Project Compassion. The money raised supports people around the globe and here at home in Australia, to live with dignity and to make a true difference for themselves and their families.
We have Project Compassion boxes in every classroom and in the admin office to support Caritas Australia this Lenten season and help support vulnerable people around the world, now and for all generations. With your support, Caritas Australia has been able to support vulnerable communities around the world to tackle poverty, food security, education, water and sanitation and disaster risk reduction.
Project Compassion 2025, reminds us that the good that we do today will extend and impact the lives of generations to come to build a better future for all.
As St Pope John Paul II said, “The future starts today, not tomorrow.” Together, we can help vulnerable communities face their challenges today and build a better tomorrow for all future generations.
Here is a lovely Lenten prayer to pray together as a family …
Open our hearts to you word, O Lord, that we may be renewed
Open our hands to receive and to give, that we may be replenished
Open our minds to the silence of Your presence, that we may be refreshed – Amen

Over the last few weeks, the Middles classes have been busy exploring different sounds from many percussion instruments. They have worked in groups to create a journey of water, using the instruments. Students then performed their compositions to their classes. They created storms, evaporation, thunder, hail, waterfalls, water treatment plants, drains going into the ocean, rain falling into puddles and many other creative scenes.
Cathy Colaciello, Italian Teacher

I aim to teach fun, functional language that stimulates the love of learning a language for the children at our school. I will be using a whole school approach that scaffolds the Italian language for each level, therefore encouraging the children to use this language at home if they have siblings at school.
If you have any questions about the program or you'd like to visit the Italian room, please let me know.
Grazie millie!
Signora Colaciello
Buon Pomeriggio Everyone! My name is Sajith and I am so happy to be 2025’s Italian Leader.
I am really grateful for being this year's Italian leader because I would like to show everyone how Italian is a very fun and easy language to learn! As Italian leader, I will give up a lot of my time to not only help students learn Italian but also help our Italian teacher, Signora Colaciello. As our school is a multicultural school, I think it would tell the community that we just don't learn English but we also learn Italian. I am really passionate about this role because I like learning about different countries and I just adore Italy’s food and culture.
As an Italian leader, even if it’s during play time or class time, I will always go and help Signora Colaciello when she needs it.
So, let’s make 2025 the best year for Italian!
Ciao, my name is Storm and I am your 2025 Italian leader and I am grateful to be one of the many leaders in this school.
I am a helpful, kind and supportive person ready to help anyone no matter the circumstances if it’s speaking, helping the lovely Signora Colaciello around the Italian room or just being a nice person.
I like to play tennis on the weekends and hangout with my friends. I also like gaming, riding my scooter and of course speaking Italian. I have 4 siblings and 1 very cute dog named Dingus.
I am very proud to be your 2025 Italian leader.
Arrivederci!

The Camp Australia Outside school hours care program provides a safe environment ain which all can explore and play.
Our school uses the Audiri App to help us communicate more effectively with our Parent community. This type of notification does not usually require a response from parents (as Operoo does).
We ask parents to install our Audiri School App which is easily obtainable from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
Once installed, just search for our school name “St Joachim's Primary School”.
Absence notifications are sent to the school via the Audiri App. These notifications are seen by the classroom teacher, and the office staff who manage the daily roll.
Parents and carers have an obligation to notify the school of their child’s absence as soon as possible on the day of absence - preferably before 8:30am.
Other messages such as early pick up, can also sent using the Absence notifications form of the Audiri App.
Here’s a video on how to send absence notifications.
If you're having trouble with your Audiri App on your phone, it may need to be deleted and the latest version installed. Families and staff are telling us that this has fixed any Audiri issues that they have been having.
Thank you to families who keep their Operoo profiles up to date such as when they change their address, phone number, parents work contact details etc. If you could also email the office@sjcarrumdowns.catholic.edu.au and let us know, so that we can adjust on our system as well.
St Joachim's Uniform is available from Peninsula Uniforms online shop or by visiting their shop in Carrum Downs.
