Dear Parents,
Congratulations to our year 3 and Year 5 students who sat for four NAPLAN tests in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy this week. I am pleased to report that all students were focused and engaged during the testing. Thank you to our Year 3 and Year 5 / 6 staff for preparing our students so well. Individual student reports, informing parents of students’ performance in these tests, are expected to be delivered in July.
We will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day next Monday (17th March). St. Patrick is the patron Saint of the Melbourne Archdiocese, after whom our Cathedral is named. Thank you to our Parents and Friends who are generously supplying green jelly for all students to enjoy on Monday.
Next week we celebrate Catholic Education week. The theme is "Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you (Is 60: 1). There are 291 Catholic schools in Melbourne, which educate 118,300 students, which is one in five of all students. We are very proud of the faith-based education, based on excellence and equity, that our Catholic parish school provides for our students.
Thank you again to our Parents and Friends group, who have funded the purchase of new football and basketball tops for students to wear when representing the school. We are so grateful for the hard work our P & F consistently do to support the school!
Free student broadband - The Australian Government has announced an additional $4.9 million in funding to NBN Co to extend the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) to 30 June 2028 to ease cost-of-living pressures and narrow the digital divide for unconnected families with school-age children. To apply, families are encouraged to contact the National Referral Centre run by Anglicare Victoria on 1800 954 610 (10.00 am – 6.00 pm Monday to Friday) or visit www.anglicarevic.org.au/student-internet.
I will be away on long service leave for the final two weeks of this term. During my absence our Deputy Principal, Irene Stewart, will be Acting Principal. Thank you to Irene for looking after students, staff and families, as always.

Parents may open the gate and drive their cars into the school grounds at 2:30pm as long as there are no classes playing / working on the asphalt. The car park is a part of the play ground and includes basketball court and volleyball court which needs to be available should a teacher wish to use this with her / his class.

At St Joachim's, we are committed to ensuring that every student maximises their learning each day. Our classrooms follow structured routines and procedures, helping students feel confident and prepared for what’s ahead. The daily schedule is discussed each morning, and any changes to the routine are communicated in advance. These strategies help eliminate uncertainty, allowing students to focus fully on their learning.
As parents, you play a vital role in supporting your child’s education. Ensuring regular attendance, participating in school events, reading the newsletter, Operoo notices, and following our Facebook page are great ways to stay connected with what’s happening at school.
While we understand that illness is sometimes unavoidable, we encourage families to minimize other absences so that students have the best opportunity to achieve their learning goals.
If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher know so we can work together to get your child to school every day.

Behind the scenes are four of our wonderful senior students - Lucy (SWD), Aiden (SWD), Jasper (SHJ), Gavin (STC) and Zonita (SWD).
Lucy, Aiden, Jasper, Gavin and Zonita, after some initial training successfully collected money, tallied numbers, prepared and delivered orders to classes.
We were impressed with the way they listened to each other, asked questions and discussed the task at hand. They even took on board the feedback from teachers. We know they will continue to do a great job in getting zooper doopers to our students on Fridays.

In Religion, we have looked at how we can be more like Jesus during this period of Lent. Children have been exploring the significance of Lent and Easter and are developing an awareness of the signs and symbols associated with this time.
(Second Sunday of Lent)
This Thursday 13th March, JMR (Year 1) participated in the Liturgy of the Word. JSE (Year 1) joined them for the celebration.
The following is their reflection and prayers:
In today’s gospel we hear about an amazing thing that happened to Jesus, which showed the disciples just how important he was. A great change came over him. As a class we reflected about some of the changes we can make during this Lenten season to be more like Jesus and follow in His footsteps.
Loving God,
We pray for our parish, family and friends: that we may take steps to change our own lives. Lord, hear us.
All: Lord, hear our prayer.
Loving God,
Help us to put the needs of others above our own. Lord, hear us.
All: Lord, hear our prayer.
Dear God,
Help us to be generous to those who need our time and attention. Lord, hear us.
All: Lord, hear our prayer.
Dear God,
Thank you for being with us on our Journey through our happy times and hard times.
Lord hear us
All: Lord, hear our prayer.
Project Compassion is Caritas Australia’s annual Lenten fundraising and awareness-raising appeal. Project Compassion assists and empowers communities in Australia and all over the world by helping those in great need to shape a better future for themselves, their families and their communities.
As you would be aware students from our school have been contributing money to this cause through the Project Compassion boxes at school.
We encourage you to put your compassion into action this Lent by supporting Project Compassion. Donations can be made in the homeroom each morning or at the Front Office.
On our recent Staff Faith Formation Day, the theme of the Jubilee Year of Hope was explored in depth. The staff engaged in a meaningful session that deepened their understanding of 'hope' through the lens of Scripture and the significance of the Jubilee Year. This provided an opportunity for personal reflection and connection to the theme, allowing us to integrate the message of hope into our faith and teaching.
In addition to this, we explored the concept of pilgrimage—not just as a physical journey, but also as a personal faith journey. This reflection encouraged us to consider how we can incorporate the essence of pilgrimage into our own lives and how it can enhance our faith development.
Looking ahead, our staff is committed to creating opportunities throughout the year for students to explore both the themes of hope and pilgrimage in the classroom and within the broader school and parish community. We are excited to journey together in faith and share these concepts with our students and their families.

The Chinese Lunar New Year is celebrated each year with the first full moon. This year it was the 29th January until the 12th February.
All the students have engaged in an art piece relating to this year being “The Year of the Snake”. We discussed and explored qualities of snakes and discovered lots of interesting facts about snakes. The snake is known for its intelligence, strategy and charm!
The students in Year 2 enjoyed adding their name to their snake and adding either warm or cool colours to the body of their snake. Well done to all the Year 2 students for a brilliant start to the year!

St Joachim's Primary School P&F
The Camp Australia Outside school hours care program provides a safe environment ain which all can explore and play.
Our school uses the Audiri App to help us communicate more effectively with our Parent community. This type of notification does not usually require a response from parents (as Operoo does).
We ask parents to install our Audiri School App which is easily obtainable from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
Once installed, just search for our school name “St Joachim's Primary School”.
Absence notifications are sent to the school via the Audiri App. These notifications are seen by the classroom teacher, and the office staff who manage the daily roll.
Parents and carers have an obligation to notify the school of their child’s absence as soon as possible on the day of absence - preferably before 8:30am.
Other messages such as early pick up, can also sent using the Absence notifications form of the Audiri App.
Here’s a video on how to send absence notifications.
If you're having trouble with your Audiri App on your phone, it may need to be deleted and the latest version installed. Families and staff are telling us that this has fixed any Audiri issues that they have been having.
Thank you to families who keep their Operoo profiles up to date such as when they change their address, phone number, parents work contact details etc. If you could also email the office@sjcarrumdowns.catholic.edu.au and let us know, so that we can adjust on our system as well.
St Joachim's Uniform is available from Peninsula Uniforms online shop or by visiting their shop in Carrum Downs.
