Gary
On July 1, 2009, we were asked to go to DuPage County Animal Control &
rescue a little girl who had been abandoned in her carrier--in the middle
of a parking lot. She was sick.
Our friend Debbie Herren (with Fur Angels) had been contacted to do
this rescue, but she was out of town, and asked if we could do it.
Kurt & I packed our emergency kit, & left for Wheaton.
We planned to name the little girl after Kerry, the woman at Animal
Control we had spoken with--but one look into the carrier
showed us that this was a boy--and a very ill one, at that. We named him
"Gary" which rhymed with "Kerry"--and went to the back room, so I could
give him fluids, before we left.
Kerry had given subQ fluids to dogs & cats before, but never a
ferret. She was fascinated at how easy it was, and now she will be able to
help the next one that comes in dehydrated, or down. We usually work
with three other counties, but this was our first encounter with DuPage.
They`re a nice bunch of people, & willing to learn. We have made some
great new friends!
Gary is probably four years old, and a bit on the fragile side, but he gets
along well enough with the others that he is able to run with the Star
Wars group (our largest & healthiest playgroup.) At this point, he has
gained several ounces, & has his new winter coat.
He`s a really nice little boy. I can`t understand how someone could
just put him into a carrier, & drive away, leaving him behind like that.
How could they do it...

Our deepest gratitude to Pat Shaskin,
who sponsored Gary (as well as Bear Bear) for Christmas 2009.
Bear Bear didn`t make it til Christmas, but Pat sent TONS of treats & toys,
as well as a Ferret Depot gift certificate to Gary, & in memory of
Bear Bear. (Made me cry.) There are some pictures of the ferrets playing
with their gifts, under "Sanctuary News" on the nav bar.
Thanks so much, Pat!
