Cassie & Bella

On August 4, 2009, we got a call from a real estate agent. She told us that

some renters had called from their cell phone to tell them that they had

left the state, three days prior. They had left furniture, appliances,

 clothing--and their ferrets--and they wouldn`t be back.

(would we take the ferrets?)

We asked how many there were, & the lady said "I don`t know. The place

is out in the country, they are in a bedroom, and I won`t go NEAR them!"

We weren`t sure if there were two or twenty--or even if this was a

backyard breeder situation, etc.

Kurt & I packed our emergency kit & several carriers, and off we went...

The house had been closed up, & was very hot. Flies were buzzing around

the cage. There were huge smelly piles of feces in all of the cage corners.

There were pin holes in the piles---with maggots crawling out of them.

The food dish was tipped over, and empty. There was a water dispenser

with about 1/2 inch of sludgy, dark, murky water in it. The water smelled

like sewage.

According to the cleanup crew, a man had been renting the property, and

his adult children lived with him. When the man was killed in a motorcycle

accident, the kids stayed on, & paid the rent---for a while, at least. We

believe the ferrets had belonged to the man. The cage was a beautiful,

large Ferret Nation cage, and written on it, in pink glitter glue, were the

names"Cassie" and "Bella" There was an empty Zupreem bag on top of the

cage. At some point, someone had cared for them, very much.

We could only guess who was who, but we called the

little champagne girl Bella, and the larger DEW Cassie.  We guessed both

were under two years of age.

When we offered food, both girls ate so fast they were choking. (At least

they were eating!) We guessed they had run out of food, probably the day

before...

We asked the real estate agent if she would consider a donation to our

sanctuary to help with Cassie & Bella`s expenses, & she happily agreed to

send us a little something---which never came :(

October 9, 2013

Cassie & Bella are both still with us!

Cassie had a lump removed from the top of her head, a few weeks ago. It was benign, and she`s recovering well. Bella remains in good health. The girls are somewhere between five & six years old now. They are in the Funlovers group--the largest, and friendliest group in the room. All is well for these two.

More later.
