Melbourne, Victoria motorists try to dodge $140 million in fines

Motorists in Victoria owe $140 million in unpaid parking fines and some councils in Melbouren and Victoria are taking drastic action to recover the money. in 2006, the State Government of Victoria introduced sanctions for fine-dodgers, including wheel clamping or suspension of registration. Figures show motorists owe Melbourne City Council $23.7 million for parking fines issued in the past two years, of which $12.3 million is likely to be written off. The State Government has the power to clamp vehicles, suspend vehicle registration and drivers' licences and to garnishee wages of fine defaulters.

- Melbourne $23.7 million, $12.3 million doubtful

- Yarra $13.8 million, $11.3 million doubtful

- Port Phillip $14.2 million.
