Adelaide City Council's till is much fuller thanks to higher parking fine revenues

In the past financial year, Adelaide City Council parking inspectors have issued one fine every two minutes, reaping $12.8 million. More than 239,400 expiation notices worth $12.8 million were issued in 2011-12. The year before, more than 284,700 fines totalling $8.8 million were handed out.

More than 8140 drivers complained about a parking fine in 2011-12 - up from 5890 in 2010-11.The most common reason a driver provided for disputing a fine was based on compassionate grounds.Unusual excuses for receiving fines included a dog breaking wind in the car, forcing the driver to pull over and illegally park, and a driver who was so distressed over the poor quality of their apple and rhubarb slice that they also were forced to pull over and illegally park.The City of Adelaide has 34 parking inspectors to police 21,500 regulated on-street carparks.They hand out fines ranging from $44 for overstaying the time limit to $320 for stopping in a disabled parking area.Read more...
