It has been reported that two out of every five appeals to Melbourne City council over parking fines succeeds. That's right, out of every 5 appeals, statistics show that two fines are waived by council. This means that a total of $4.2M in fines are dropped on appeal. In the past year alone, 89,021 drivers appealed their fines to the five councils and 34,521 were let off. And in Port Phillip and Darebin, almost 50 per cent of those challenging fines are being let off.

Parking fine appeals involving Melbourne City, Stonnington, Darebin, Yarra and Port Phillip councils revealed that, overall, 40 per cent of drivers in Victoria who challenged a fine got off. Freedom of Information data shows the City of Stonnington and the City of Melbourne are proving to be the toughest councils to beat fines. City of Melbourne spokesman Sam Bishop said the council recorded more than one million parking transactions every month.
