Free tutoring workshops: Tutoring is being offered to all students in classes up through Calculus III and Linear Algebra (Math Thinking; Pre-Calc; Algebra&Calculus; Calculus I, II, III; Linear Algebra). The Departmental free tutoring will begin on January 3. The last day of tutoring for Spring 2003 is May 5. All sessions are held in room 704 Courant. There will be a tutoring schedule posted on the door of the tutoring room at all times. No appointments are necessary. This is group tutoring not private nor one-on-one. Handouts are available to students outside the Math office (room 705). Additional free tutoring service: College of Arts and Science - Weinstein Dormitory - "The Learning Center" - 5-11 University Place - Lobby.
Do not forget to submit your homework in due time. Do not expect me to ask for it.
Starting today the classroom is at the Silver Center, room 808.
The first quiz will be Tuesday, January 28.
The required textbook is Single Variable Calculus - Early Trancendentals, Fourth Edition, by James Stewart. The course will cover chapters 1 to 6, and a few handouts will be given.
Homework will be assigned weekly, mostly problems taken from the textbook, and, unless otherwise mentioned, will be due on the following Tuesday. Selected problems will be graded as soon as a grader is assigned, and returned to you the following week. Late homework will not be graded, but the two worst homework grades will not count for the homework average.
The first quiz will be on January 28. It will count as 1 extra point to be added to the midterm exam grade. It will not be part of the quiz average.
The final grade will be based on the grades of homework average (hw), second and third quizzes (q2 and q3), midterm exam (mt), and final exam (f) according to the weighted average (q2 + q3 + 2hw + 2mt + 4f)/10.
You may choose to prepare a final individual project. It may be a written or a computational project, selected from the book or from other sources to be arranged. In case you miss one quiz, the project grade will replace the quiz missed. In case you do not miss any quiz, a good project could improve your final grade.
It is important to check the course web site periodically. There you will find the latest homework assignments, copies of all handouts, announcements, and a brief description of what has been covered in each lecture.
In the course web site there is a link to several math web sites, with many instructive animations, and even some math games. This is a great way to lose any "calc fear" you may have. I will indicate the corresponding links after we cover the topic in the lecture.
Calculators will not be allowed in quizzes or exams.
