Leonard Burge was born in the Strand in London’s West End. In 1911 he lived at 13 Palatinate Buildings, Gurney Street (this street no longer exists, having been demolished to make way for the Heygate Estate, itself now demolished) with his parents, 54-year-old James Edward Burge, a theatre electrician’s assistant, from the Strand and Jane Burge, 43, from St. Martin’s, London, five of his six siblings (his mother had had 14 children) and a boarder. Later, Jane Burge gave her address as 89 St. Agnes Place, Kennington.
