Temp. Capt. John Hugh Jerwood, Durh. L.I.
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, he maintained his position, regardless of withdrawals on his right and left and of the fact that the enemy had penetrated the line on both his flanks. He displayed a coolness and fearlessness which inspired all ranks with confidence.
Information from the 1911 census
John Hugh Jerwood, the son of the Rev Canon Thomas Frederick Jerwood, 65, and Dorothea Elizabeth Jerwood, 57, is described on the 1911 census as a university student (he was at Jesus College, Cambridge). The family lived at the rectory at Little Bowden, Market Harborough. In 1916 Jerwood married 22-year-old Cecilia Mary H. Powles in the parish of St Giles, Middlesex.
Remembered in Wisden as captain of the first Eleven at Oakham School; played for Jesus College, Cambridge Eleven. Wisden states that Jerwood was wounded twice.
In 1920 Jerwood's widow, then only 26, married jouralist Arthur Wellesley L'Estrange Fawcett at the church of St Jude, South Kensington.
I have not yet identified exactly how Jerwood was connected with St Andrew's or Stockwell but possibly this will become clear in the fullness of time.
