He was called up fromthe Reserve at the outbreak of war, and was drafted to the Western Front, where he took part in the heavy fighting during the Retreat from Mons. He was killed in action at the first Battle of Ypres on october 29th, 1914, and was entitled to the Mons Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.
