British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920 In civilian life, Albert Edward Slough, 30 years and 6 months when he joined up on 26 May 1915, was a fitter's mate, who worked for The Nugger Polish Co Ltd at Kennington Oval for five years. His testimonial, dated 18 June 1915, is shown here. He is a "good workman and always gave satisfaction in his duties." From the service records it appears that the Army promoted Slough to fitter on 12 June.Slough gave his address at this time as 14 Farmers Road, Kennington. He was 5 feet 3½ inches, with a chest measurement of 35 inches, which he could expand by 2½ inches, and slightly myopic in both eyes. Slough rose steadily through the ranks: Acting Corporal Fitter on 20 November 1915, Corporal Fitter on 5 January 1917, Fitter Serjeant on 1 March 1917. Then he was killed in action on 22 October 1917. His record shows only one transgression: he was absent from roll call on 22 April 1916 for which he was reprimanded. He left a widow and four children, born in 1907, 1910, 1912 and 1915. Ellen received a pension of 36 shillings and thruppence (£1 16s. 3d.). By then she had remarried, becoming Mrs Ellen Mary Cardew.
