However, the a family tree at ancestry.co.uk gives his birthplace as Kiel, Russia (1883), although he may have been born in Germany and his original name may have been Pinnau. He married Amy Bertha Clarke in West Ham in 1907, with whom he had a daughter, Bertha, and was living at Custom House, 12 Otley Road, West Ham, in 1911, where he was described as a seaman. He enlisted in the London Regiment at Canning Town.
