HOSIER, H., Sergeant, 6th London Regiment.

He volunteered in September 1914, and in the following year was drafted to the Western Front. There he saw active service in many important engagements until April 26th, 1916, when he was killed by a bomb while attempting to save his officer and sergeant-major.

He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, General Service and Victory Medals.

Information from the 1911 census

Henry was the son of a lighterman working for the South Metropolitan Gas Company. He worked for the same company, as a clerk. The entire family was Lambeth-born. Robert Hosier, 59, his wife, Emma, 54, their children - Emma, 31, a dressmaker; Henry, then 20; Louisa, 17, a dressmaker; and Arthur, 12. William, 29, Rebecca, 27, and Lizzie, 25 are on 1901 census as a bookpacker, shop waitress and dressmaker respectively. The family lived at 12 Henry Street (now disappeared), off Kennington Lane.
