Nest box locations

The nest boxes in Redland Green are mostly scattered around its peripheries, as that is where most of the vegetation is. Several boxes are in the Dell, which is quite densely vegetated. Both parents and young birds benefit from vegetation around a nesting box: this gives the parents somewhere to stop before entering the nest, to check whether any threats are present. Young birds leaving the nest need places to fly to while they are still gaining confidence and experience.

The boxes are almost all located high up in trees, inaccessible other than by ladder. This means that the risk of predation by domestic cats is reduced while the nest is in active use.

Below are lists of the boxes in different sections of the Green. There are different kinds of boxes, aimed at catering for a variety of bird species.
