Software
General
Ninite - a great way to quickly and easily install a lot of different software for Windows. Some software from Ninite that I recommend:
Notepad++ - basic text editor that does color coding and offers other benefits for writing code in many languages.
Browsers - when something doesn’t work right on a web site, try a different browser
Python
JDK - for Java development
AppsAnywhere - for quickly running different software on FGCU computers
Microsoft Azure Dev Tools for Teaching (formerly Microsoft Imagine) Microsoft website for free software, training, ebooks, and more.
Windows 10 (consumer editions), version 1909
Visual Studio Enterprise
A lot of the software from comes as an ISO file.
If you just want to install the software from the file, you first need to mount it. In Windows 10 you can right click and mount the ISO file to use it. More information.
If you need to make a disc from the ISO file you cannot treat it like a regular file, you must burn the image. In most versions of Windows you can double click the file to do this. If your version of Windows cannot, get ImgBurn from Ninite.
To use with a bootable USB drive, I recommend Rufus. (requires admin rights)
OnTheHub - for discounted software for students
Windows Snipping Tool - use this to capture screen shots. Screen shots are useful in many situations, including showing that you created running programs.
Accounts
Google Account There are tons of benefits to having a Google Account. Create one if you don’t already have one. Among the services you will then have access to are:
Google Drive - use to store files (flash drives should not be used because they could be lost or damaged) and to create files like documents, spreadsheets, and presentations (does a lot of what Microsoft Office does, but for free!) Install the program on your main computer to create a special folder that will sync with the cloud or just use drive.google.com
Microsoft Account - (note, FGCU eagle accounts are Microsoft accounts)
Office Online create files like documents, spreadsheets, and presentations without installation
OneDrive use to store files (flash drives should not be used because they could be lost or damaged). Install and set up the program on your main computer to create a special folder that will sync with the cloud or just use the web site.
