Incumbent (PI)

The incumbent (usually vicar or rector) of a parish was responsible for the supervision of his community, both spiritually and as chairman of the parish vestry. He was also responsible for the registration of baptisms, marriages and burials, as well as other areas of church life. Incumbents’ records will therefore include licences for curates, confirmation notices, etc., along with papers concerning his own personal work, such as letters or sermon notes.

CROSCOMBE: Pomeroy of Berry Pomeroy as Patron and Lord of Manor of Croscombe.

A missing bit of Pomeroy history, eliminated from the "official" History of Croscombe Manor.

The Old Hall is all that survives of the ancient manor house of Croscombe, now a National Trust Property.

The description on the Croscombe Hall web page details how the property came from the Palton family to Anne Courtenay of Powderham. She married 2nd a Densell of Weare Gifford, and her daughter, Elizabeth Densell, married Martin Fortescue of Filleigh. Elizabeth married 2nd Sir Richard Pomeroy of Berry Pomeroy, and left Croscombe to their 2nd son, Thomas Pomeroy. (IMP Thomas Pomeroy, 1508).

He died without heirs, and Croscombe passed to his older brother Edward Pomeroy, of Berry Pomeroy.
