Web site and research by Alma LaFrance

Henry Pomeroy, Linen Merchant of London, Son of William Pomeroy, Merchant Taylor of London, and Grandson of Henry Pomeroy, Gent, of St. Germans, Cornwall.

His Will 1783.

1. Wife: Jane nee Wheeler:

2. Daughter Mary Mason wife of Kender Mason

3. Thomas Pomeroy, of London, nephew of Henry.

What is most interesting about this man, who did not have sons, was that his farm and lands in Deptford, Greenwich, and Camberwell, were left to his oldest Mason grandson, Henry William Mason, on the condition that he "assume the name and arms Pomeroy." Henry William Mason and his brother Kender Mason, Jr, also inherited the estates of their father, Kender Mason in London, Middlesex, Kent, Surrey, and Buckinghamshire, as well as estates and plantations in islands of Montserrat, Antigua, and Dominica.

Henry POMEROY married Jane WHEELER 28 May 1745 Saint Luke, Old Charlton, Kent.

At right: St Olave Church Interior: All Hallows, Hart Street

(Note: because of some specific wording in Jane Wheeler Pomeroy's will, I believe that this is a 2nd marriage for Henry Pomeroy, Merchant of London. Specifically, Jane calls Henry’s daughter “my dear daughter-in-law Mary, wife of Kender Mason.”) Given the date of Henry and Jane’s marriage, (1745,) daughter Mary would have been, at best, age16 at the time of her marriage, and her husband Kender Mason would have been age 40. )

Mary Pomeroy married Kender Mason, (he was bp. 1722, St Mary Whitechapel) marriage:

22 Feb 1762, St Olive, All Hallows Staining, and London.

Her husband Kender Mason was listed in 1794 in the Directory of London and Westminster & Borough of Southwark as “Merchant, at 16 Throgmorton Street.

Children of Kender Mason and Mary Pomeroy Mason:

1. Henry William Kender Bp 16 Sep 1763, St Olave, Hart Street, London. (It appears on the map that this is the same church as St Olave, All Hallows, Staining, above.)

2. Kender Mason bp 12 Feb 1765, St Olave Hart Street, London

Pomeroy Linen-Drapers in Leadenhall Street.

By 1731 Henry Pomeroy, William Pomeroy, and Bartholomew Pomeroy dealt in textiles at Leadenhall Street.

At one point they became partners with Thomas Streatfield, who eventually went off on his own.

“Pomeroys and Streatfield” suffered losses on linens shipped to James Beekman at NY on the Dover, Livingston, in 1755.

From July 1757 the firm was called Pomeroys and Hodgkin.

In October 1737 William Pomeroy became a Director of the East India Company.

Their next partner was Samuel Hodgkin.

Henry Pomeroy retired in the summer of 1769.

The firm continued as B. Pomeroy and S. Hodgkin until the latter died late in 1771.

The firm was carried on as Bartholomew Pomeroy & Son until Bartholomew Pomeroy retired during the summer of 1778.

Bartholomew Pomeroy died in Jan. 1780. (Beekman Merchantile Papers, pp. 548-549.)

In 1790 the executors of this company claimed losses £18,307 in Georgia, New York, South Carolina and Massachusetts, due to the Revolutionary War. (Beekman Merchantile Papers.)

In 1794 Thomas Pomeroy, Linen Draper is located at 144 Leadenhall Street. (Directory of London and Westminster, & Borough of Southwark.)
