Sometimes only a single document offers us the sole proof of a person's existence and, for some members of society, their name and the date in which they appear, is the only information we have.

So it is with Richard Pomeroy.

To the escheator in Devon. Order in presence of the next friends of Richard

son of Richard Pomerey knight,

to assign dower to Elizabeth late wife of Sir Richard,

having taken of her an oath etc.

Powley’s list of the children of Sir Richard does not include the Richard in the Calendar of Close Rolls: Sir Richard's will was proved at Lambeth 20 Oct 1496. Named: Thomas, his son,: Edward, his son; Sir John, his brother; Blanche, Richard's daughter AND her son "whom recently he had, through the death of his (the boy's ) father, with his lands and tenements until the boy should reach lawful age."

And Elizabeth, a daughter.....and his widow, Elizabeth.
