These records list names of both owners and occupants of property in England and Wales subject to the national land tax as of 1798.

The amount assessed is recorded although properties valued at under 20 shillings per year were officially exempted. The list is by community, but the property details are not recorded.

1798 Land Tax

St Austell, Cornwall

Walter Pomery: sen., bookseller, stationer & scrivener, Saint Austell

c 1798 owned the property where he resided. Tax due 9 . 9 shillings and pence.

Further, a Mr. Pomeroy leased a Tenament at Newton Farm in St Austell from Mrs. Sawle.

Tax 9.8 shillings and pence. (This suggests a 3rd Pomeroy residing in St Austell during this period.)

Walter Pomery of St Austell represented,in 1808, a long standing case surrounding Henry Pomeroy of Grampound (Mayor 1739-1741.) (The town of Grampound is chiefly in the parish of Creed. There was a small woolen trade carried on in Grampound and the manufacture of gloves and a tannery. )

Charles Pomery (1729-1826), married Grace Pethicke in 1754 in Liskeard. They had nine children including three sons who had children. There were two records for "Chs" Pomeroy..Liskeard, and "Bow, in Liskeard."

Bow in Liskeard: Chs Pomeroy owned 3 houses.

This family has been researched back to St Neot, 1575 Pomery Family.

Land Tax Redemption 1798

Henry Pomeroy

There are several farms and hamlets in the parish of Gorran, the little village with its 15th century church being about a mile inland from the small fishing port of Gorran Haven, which is now the main centre of population.

1. H. Pomery, held of Earl MT Edgcumbe...valued at 17 shillings.

2. “Sts” Pomery:" (I wonder if “Sts” stands for “Sisters..”?

This property, 9 acres, was also valued at 17 shillings.

Both properties were owned by Earl MT Edgcumbe, the "Leaseholder" was Jas. Nichols.

Was "H" Pomery the man married to Sarah Rippen? Or was he a son born 1762.

Were "Sts" a couple of the daughters of Henry and Sarah?

Henry Pomery had of Mr. Wooldridge, in Creed Cornwall:

two properties:

One a tenement called Garlenick, Grampound with Creed, assessed at 6 pounds, a smaller piece was assessed 6 shillings.

Nearby was a great deal of property leased by William Biddock.

Peter Pomery, son of Henry Pomery, married Mary Biddock in 1797.

No doubt this family is closely connected to the Gorran Pomerys in the above record.

Note: There was John Pomeroy, Mayor of Grampound 1739-1741. (Will 1761). (Ok. which is it. Henry or John?)

Walter Pomeroy of St Austell, represented the Mayor in a Parlimentary case as to the election procedure of John Pomeroy as mayor.

Lawhitton is a civil parish and village in east Cornwall, The village is situated two miles (3 km) southwest of Launceston and half-a-mile west of Cornwall's border with Devon at the River Tamar[1].

It is in the Launceston registration district. The border with Devon forms the parish's eastern boundary; to the north, it is bounded by St Thomas by Launceston; to the west by Launceston, and to the south by Lezant.

Roger Pomeroy married Mary Fitze 1725.

owned by Elizth Davy. Tax, 8 shillings. (widow.)

Occupant #2: John Pomery, occupied property in Trewen owned by John Gynn: 16 Shillings.

This would be John Pomeroy: Born Lewannick. 1719. Died Trewenn 1804.

OPC Lewannick records indicate that he might be the son of Richard Pomeroy (Richard: who died 17 Oct 1742, Lewannick, Cornwall. )

4. Rev. Jn'o Pomory, also listed as an extensive land owner.

In order to sort out the properties of "M. Pomeroy, Jn'o Pomery, Esq, and the Rev. Jn'o Pomery, and to determine what overlap there is, not only between them, but between the Pomeroy's in Bodmin, a careful analysis of available records in the National Archives would have to be made.
