Brixham Pomeroy's: 1575-1620

In 1641, Tormoham, administration of the estate of Thomas Pomeroy was given to his Brother Valentine Pomeroy. Valentine was the son of Thomas Pomeroy and Honor Rolle. Where is the baptism record for this Thomas, son of Thomas? There is a gap of almost 10 years in the baptism records for Thomas Pomeroy and Honor Rolle. Who else might be missing?

Was William Pomeroy, father of William, bp Brixham 1597 another son of Thomas and Honor Rolle? I don't think so.

I believe he was William Pomeroy, son of Henry Pomeroy and Agnes Huckmore. Henry was "son and heir" of Richard Pomeroy and Eleanor Coker, of Bowden at Totnes. Richard (b 1492) was son of Thomas Pomeroy and Agnes Kelloway.

Subject: Brixham Pomeroys and DNA

I remember that your interests included the descendants of Eltweed Pomeroy so though that you may be interested to know that my DNA shows 4 separate links to Eltweed's descendants through two of his sons. More evidence of the link Dorset and the Devon families. I'm happy to provide more information if it is of interest to you.

WILLIAM POMEROY, son of Henry Pomeroy and Agnes Huckmore: Birth not recorded in Brixham because he was not born there. Only proof is in archives:

Research Notes: Jan 2022:

We can see in those records that Agnes (Anne) Huckmore brought some of the property from her father William Huckmore to the Harris marriage. (Below) It appears that she also brought some of the leases of property acquired from her first husband Henry Pomeroy. The first child she had with Edward Harris was baptized Jan 20 1565. (He was close to 65 years old. She was 35.

We do not have accurate dates for Henry, but assume he died close to 1563.

Land records in National Archives tracing specific connections of this Pomeroy family:

The first note is from POWLEY:

Richard Pomerye (-1543-/50 ) and his son and heir HUGH disposed of premises in Magna Totnes-Bowdon in totnes), Tybecomb (Ashprington) and Aysshepryngton 12 Nov 1543 to John and William Giles: (Foot of Fine, 35 Henry VIII, PRO Bundle 8, File 41, No 75). Thank you for your informative email. I am so impressed with the work you have done with the DNA and amazed at how the Pomeroys are all fitting together, it certainly overturns the theory that some of the Pomeroys were family retainers etc.

The Irish DNA match that I had was from Palllice in Cork. The family emigrated to the US:

Curiously I also have a DNA match with Lewannick. Unfortunately the tree on ancestry is private, but if it would be useful I would be happy to contact the gentleman concerned and ask whether he would be happy to share information.

My Brixham Pomeroy ancestor is William who died in 1615, he could have been born around 1561 to 1570 and married a younger wife when he was in his late 20s to mid 30s. His children were born between 1597 and 1614. So it looks as though he may well be the son of Henry and Agnes Huckmore. I guess though that it will all depend on when Henry died! I very much liked your comment though linking the trees to Brixham shipbuilding. It does sound very reasonable!

kind regards

Subject: Re: Brixham Pomeroys and DNA

Thanks. Very interesting! Your chart is excellent. I can easily check their trees.

We do have a family in Ireland in the Pomeroy Family Tree dna project, of this same genetic lineage. And another in USA whose ancestor left Ireland around 1790. Another in Wilton, Wiltshire.

While autosomal DNA generally only goes back 5 generations, before being dropped, we have found DNA in some lineages that are more “stickey,” and don’t get bumped out so easily. With so many matches for you, it’s difficult not to take this seriously.

I have in the YDNA project 14 men who most certainly descend from Thomas Pomeroy, who died 1493, in Bowden at Totnes. Thomas was 3rd son of Squire Henry Pomeroy of Berry Pomeroy. Also, in the YDNA project is a 15th man who matches all the others, including Eltwid descendants, but whose YDNA lineage appears to branch prior to 1440. We know this because we can see the branching points in the SNP paths of each of the men who tested at the Y700 level. To see the branching points I had to test two men from each of the lineages. What we can’t see is earlier: The 15th man happens to be Annie’s Pomeroy ancestor. We need a second direct Pomeroy descendant to establish the earlier branching points.

Key, of course is why I believe this genetic cluster descends from the Pomeroys of Bowden at Totnes, who lived there between 1470-1555.

I have pretty solid evidence that the Pomeroys who were in Clapton in Gordano in 1590 descend from Richard Pomeroy, b 1492, at Totnes, son of Thomas Pomeroy and Agnes Kelloway. (National Archives land and chancery records.) The YDNA results at the Y700 level show those Somerset Pomeroys are solid matches to not only Eltweed, but others with connections back to Devon, especially John Pomeroy of Holne, c 1590, and men from Ireland. One is in his 90’s and lives in Millstreet Ireland.

Richard Pomeroy, b 1492, married twice. He sold his Totnes holdings around 1545 and married a widow of Thomas Arthur, lord of Clapton in Gordano.

Prior to his second marriage, Richard and his first wife had at least two sons. With evidence of a 3rd, Hugh. (Mentioned by Powley.).

Richard, the elder, had a heir was Henry Pomeroy who Married Agnes Huckmore. Henry had 3 sons, Richard, Thomas, AND WILLIAM. And a daughter Elizabeth who married Sir Thomas Harris. Richard , the younger, was Henry’s heir but didn’t have any children. I believe that the 2nd brother Thomas then inherited the property around Brixham. He was living in Cornworthy. Up until 1590.

William was an infant when Henry died and Agnes remarried Arthur HARRIS. I have only found one record that proves Henry Pomeroy and Agnes Huckmore had a son WILLIAM. (National Archives) I know there must be more proof, but not available online. Arthur Harris gave William Pomeroy, his wife’s son by her first husband, a 60 year lease of acreage containing TREES near Exmouth . This is when lumber for ship building was in short supply but ships were needing to be built. Is this a clue?

Yes, we know there was a William Pomeroy in Brixham of the correct age.

Having children in Brixham. Was he your ancestor who died 1615?

I have suspected and explored that idea. I can’t find a William elsewhere who would fit. Your DNA matches offer us the first positive clue ever found.

Until we had a YDNA result for Annie’s Pomeroy ancestor, it was easier to visualize all the men in the genetic cluster descending from Thomas Pomeroy and Agnes Kelloway. However, the result for the Lewannick Pomeroys tosses that idea out the window.

The Lewannick Pomeroy s YDNA SNP path shows he descended from an earlier ancestor that Thomas Pomeroy and Agnes Kelloway. His lineage could have come down from a Pomeroy son, cousin, uncle, or great grandfather of Thomas, son of Squire Henry. Without a second test from another man in the Lewannick Pomeroy lineage, we have no way of dating the branching points.

This means your William could have, as well, but with your matching results, I rather think it’s a big stretch to go back further.

Hope this hasn’t been too general. It’s speculation, of course. I still haven’t sorted how Eltwid’ father Richard fits.

I am impressed with what you have sorted from your ancestry test and appreciate your sharing.

Kind regards,

Alma.

Hi Alma

I am attaching the DNA links. The Eltwid descendants were not researched by me, they come from the family trees attached to my DNA member matches on Ancestry. I can't see any reason for the DNA matching unless Eltwid and my Brixham ancestors are related, but I do find it strange that all four of the Eltwid links are coming out as 5-8 cousins, while the only actual link must be further back. I've been through all the names mentioned on the Eltwid descendants' Ancestry trees and am satisfied that there are no other connections.

I also have a DNA match with a Pomeroy who comes from Ireland, but so far only one, so I'm waiting to see whether any more appear.

Kind regards

Niki
