James Pomeroy: Brixham to USA

Holne Burial 1623:

John Pomery

Markes Pomery

UPDATE JANUARY 2021:

ORIGINAL document: Holne Burial Records: Serves to support the working theory that John Pomeroy of Holne was from the Pomeroy family of Bowden at Totnes.

This burial of Markes Pomeroy, who m. 1578, Joan Drew in Paignton, in 1623, the same year as John Pomeroy of Holne is suggestive. Markes had dissapeared from the Paignton records after the birth of a daughter Wilmot 1578.

Update May 2016: Exhaustive research in Devon and London suggests that James Pomeroy was the son of James Pomeroy and Elizabeth Dolbear, of Buckfastleigh; bap. 1754. This family can be traced back to John Pomeroy and Easter, of Holne.

Pat Doetkott writes: (February 2016): "I used James Pomeroy born 1726 and wife Elizabeth Dollar as the first generation because (1) his birth date matches the date given to the American Pomeroy Association: (2) James Pomeroy (married Joanna Scoble) baptized 1754 matches the James Pomeroy baptism in Buckfastleigh; (3) James and Joanna Scoble named their daughter Elizabeth; (4) Roger Pomeroy was baptized in Buckfastleigh in 1742. "

Pat was disappointed that neither Derek Ironmonger or Stephan Thomas pursued the Buckfastleigh line of inquiry because they did not have a birth date.

Her researcher found plenty of evidence that James Pomeroy was linked to the local business classes of the period. His daughter Mary married Robert Furneaux, a well known ship owner and merchant in Brixham. His grandchildren also made good marriages. The name of one of the properties; "Varwells," is interesting as it is the name given to one of the ropewalk in Brixham. The Varwell family were also ship owners.

Further search could be made by looking at Rate Books and Land Tax Assessments for Stoke Gabriel and Buckfastleigh. (Stephan Thomas.)

Derek Iremonger writes:

"The Brixham Pomeroys stand out from most of the other Pomeroy families in that they were business people/merchants. This has been evidenced by census data and other historical records, and the fact that they intermarried within the business community of Brixham. Most Pomeroy families in our databases in the 18th and 19th century either worked on the land or had a manual trade (blacksmith, cordwainer, etc.)

Update August 2019: I was curious about what Edward B. POWLEY, author of The House of DeLa Pomerai had to say about the Buckfastleigh Pomeroys: Very little, as it turns out:

Powley: Page 9: "Rather than dwell upon the uncertain connection of the de la Pomerais with Buckfastlegh, the ecclesiastical historian should note the relation of the family to the monastery of St Mary du Val, Calvados."

While I take this to mean the discussion of the early origins of Buckfast Abbey, it is the only mention of Buckfastleigh in his entire Annals of the Family. (AML)

A descendant chart:

1. James Pomeroy , Tallow Chandler. Born c. 1751. (Birth date based upon age reported at his death.)

James died in 1835. Buried on 13 Feb 1835.

In 1781 James married Joanna Scoble in St John, Horsleydown, London. Their best man was William HOLDITCH of Buckfastleigh.

They had the following children:

2 i. James (1784-1861)

ii. Elizath. Born on 7 Aug 1786 in Paignton, Devon, England.

iii. Joanna. Born in 1789 in Brixham, Devon, England. Parents given as James and Joanna Scoble Pomeroy.

iv. William. Born in 1792 in Brixham Devon England. William died in Brixham, Devon, England, in 1805; he was 13.

3 v. Thomas, Grocer (1795-)

4 vi. Mary (1798-1875)

5 vii. John (1800-)

The recording of Joanna's middle name at the birth of her daughter provided the missing link to confirm that the marriage between James Pomeroy and Joanna Scoble 28 May 1781 at St John Horsleydown, Southwark, Surrey, is that of James Pomeroy of Brixham. "Apart from the James Pomery baptism in Buckfastleigh in 1754, no other James Pomeroy baptisms have been found in the locality." (Derek Ironmonger. 2009)

" There were no Pomeroy baptisms in Brixham between 1703 and 1770. It is therefore reasonable to assume that James Pomeroy who married Joanna Scoble in Southwark, but returned to Devon with children being born in Paignton and Brixham was not born in Brixham, but was from the locality, given the historical presence of Pomeroys." (Derek Ironmonger.)

Update: July 2014: I recently received from A.T. a copy of a "memoriam" card written by Joanna Pomeroy upon the death of British Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel who died in 1850.

The quote Joanna cited in her "exquisite, tiny handwriting," was part of Peel's resignation speech following the repeal of the Corn Laws.

YDNA Research Notes: This family belongs to Haplogroup BY160561, and has a YDNA connection to all of the Pomeroy clusters in Genetic Family B as described by the early Pomeroy Surname Project. Recent (2019) upgrades to Y700 by a members of this Genetic B group, including one from this Brixham family suggests their Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) lived around 1200AD.

That there were earlier Pomeroy ancestors we have no doubt.

The attached genetic tree is a work in progress as several of the family groups have only tested to Y-37 and the charting process (SAPP), works best with results at a higher resolution. SAPP builds a genetic tree based upon the SNPS and STRS mutations found in FTDNA YDNA results.

The solid blue lines in the chart tells us that the computer is confident of the relationships; a thin blue line indicates that there wasn't enough information to make a judgement.
