The immigrant ancestor of many of the Berry family in Northern New England was William Berry [1]*1*. He was born about 1613 in England. At the age of 18, in 1631, he immigrated to Portsmouth, New Hampshire.*2* He lived in Sandy Beach and Rye, New Hampshire for a few years before moving to Strawberry Bank and Newberry, Maine by 1635. He died before 28 June 1654. He married Jane , whose maiden name may have been Hermes.

She was born in about 1619. Jane survived William, and in about 1657 married Nathaniel Drake (1612 - about 1691).

The children of William [1] and Jane [1] Berry were:

John [2], born 1637, married Susanna _____, died before 1717. *7*

Joseph [2], see below.

Elizabeth [2], who married ca. 1652, John Locke.

Mary [2], who married John Foss.*8*

James [2], who married Eleanor Wallis (dau. of George Wallis).*9*

Rachel [2], who married John Marden.

William [2], who married 8 July 1678, Judah _____. She remarried in 1708, Nathaniel Huggins. William died before 1708. *10*

Joseph Berry [2]

Joseph [2] Berry was born around 1639, probably in Maine. He apparently married late in life, since his children were born when he was in his 50's. Whether he may have had another, earlier wife and children is not known. He married Rachel [2], who may have been the daughter of Philip Lewis [1]. *11* Joseph [2] lived in Sagamore Creek and Greenland, Maine, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He died before 1717.

The children of Joseph [2] and Rachel [2] Berry were:

Nathaniel [3], who married on 2 July 1691, Elizabeth Philbrook. *13*

Rachel [3], who married Abraham Lewis.*14*

Jane [3], who married on 5 Jan. 1692/93, Robert Goss.

Deliverance [3], who married on 14 Feb. 1697/98, Richard Pomeroy.

Joseph [3], see below.

himself and others to take a view of New England," etc. he,

He was one of the commissioners who held court at Saco

Bowman (Boman),John, Portsm. fisherman in 1672 was liv. in one half of one of Mr. John Hunking's houses. In 1672– recently from Plymouth, Eng. See Evans(11). In 1674, ‘late of Isles of Shoals’ he bot house from Joseph Berry, still called J. B.'s abuttor at Sag. Creek in 1697, but ‘widow Bowman’ owned there in 1696. Both were given church seatings in 1694. Lists 52, 313a, 329, 331ab, 335a. In 1676 they took Abigail

Pomeroy, dau of (Joseph) to bring up, and to have £12.

The following data disproves the idea that Richard Pomeroy who married Deliverance Berry was the son of Thomas Pomeroy, Isle of Shoals, and Rebecca Brookings. Richard, son of Thomas and Rebecca, was age 2 when his father died.
