Investigating South African pupils’ conceptions of what is inside their heads (Case Study)

Abstract

This paper reports data from a study that used pupil´s drawings to probe the development of 294 South African students’ conceptions of the human brain. The collected drawings were classified and interpreted based on historical models of the brain and scored on a 6-level rating scale depicting degrees of neuroanatomical resemblance. Gender, age and grades were all taken into consideration, and mixed results were obtained. Educational implications were suggested.

Stationary Universe with an Adequate Redshift

Abstract

A metric is found that is a solution to the Einstein equation and describes a stationary infinite space with a constant speed of light. This space has a constant scalar curvature and satisfies the improper Einstein equation. The speed of the flow of time in such a space is lower the farther from the origin (of the observer). The redshift of such a universe is similar to the observed redshift of our universe.

Concentrations of DDT in the edible fish species: A case study from Diamond Harbour region along the Hooghly estuary

Abstract

Pesticides are widely used in agricultural sector in the lower Gangetic delta region to boost up crop production and trigger up the process of pest control. However, many of these pesticides pose adverse impacts on the biotic community by way of bioaccumulation and biomagnification. This study attempts to evaluate the tDDT concentration in the commercially important fish tissues available in the Diamond Harbour region along the Hooghly estuaries. The tDDT concentration varies as per the order Lates calcarifer (52.19 ±2.34 ng g-1 lipid wt.) > Penaeus sp. (45.64 ±2.01 ng g-1 lipid wt.) > Tenualosa ilisha (35.65 ±1.23 ng g-1 lipid wt.) > Pangasius sp. (29.17± 1.62 ng g-1 lipid wt.) > Pampus sp. (23.46 ±1.2 ng g-1 lipid wt.) > Polynemus paradiseus (23.29 ±1.09 ng g-1 lipid wt.). Overall, these concentrations are lower than those usually observed in different parts of the World, apparently as a result of high tidal actions at regular intervals that allow dispersion of the pollutants and subsequently reduces the probability of bioaccumulation.

Abstract

Integral criteria for monitoring the state of an enterprise. Integral criteria prototype – characteristic dependencies from neurophysiology. The examples of obtaining and using integral criteria is given possible integral criteria in trade, industry, in finance (banking system). According to the differences of the Integral Criteria (IC) – classification of management systems. The use of Integral Criteria makes it possible to recognize and classify economic and financial systems without interfering with these systems. On five examples from different fields of science and technology, the universality of the principle of neurophysiology was shown, and this principle was presented as a new principle of bionics. Five examples (repetitions) of the same similarity are to justify the universality of the new principle and its use in economics, finance and management sciences, which was done. ICs provide not only optimal operating modes of the system, but ICs also allow you to determine the number of participants in the system, as well as classify each participant. At the same time, participants are recognized by their external features, which are not perceived by the participants themselves. IC is a characteristic feature of the system.

Effects of Plant Growth Promoting Bacteria on the Growth of Capsicum frutescens L.

Abstract

Unrestricted use of chemical fertilizers often exerts negative effects on soil microorganisms, productivity status of soil and contaminates the environment. This problem could be averted using Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria (PGPB) with known biofertilizer traits. Hence, this study aimed at assessing the PGPB effects on growth of Capsicum frutescens. Plant growth-promoting bacterial cultures, namely Pseudomonas stutzeri strain WL10 and Pseudomonas mallei strain TEH, were obtained from culture repository of Microbiology Department, Lagos State University (LASU), matured C. frutescens seeds were obtained from Lagos State Agricultural Input Supply, Ojo and loam soils were obtained from Botanical Garden LASU. Nurseries were made and after 4th week of nursery, the seedlings were transplanted into twenty buckets. PGPB strains were inoculated twice at the 2nd and 4th weeks after transplanting. Morphometric data were collected and analyzed using mean-standard deviation. Results revealed that seedlings of C. frutescens inoculated with WL10 PGPB strain have the highest stem height (27.67±2.52 cm), number of leaves (40.00±13.23), number of branches (4.00±0.00) and leaf area (924.80±171.87 cm2) while the highest leaf length (14.33±1.53 cm), leaf breadth (6.67±2.89 cm), petiole length (6.90±1.04 cm) favored plants inoculated with TEH PGPB strain but similar results for stem girth (1.77±0.06 cm) were observed in both inoculants on C. frutescens at the end of 5th week after inoculation compared to control. Thus, it could be concluded from this study that PGPB; P. stutzeri (WL10) and P. mallei (TEH) enhanced growth of C. frutescens. The use of PGPB as biofertilizer is cost-friendly and eco-sustainable approach to improve crop yield.

Assessment of some Nutritional and Medicinal Metabolites of Pulp, Rind and Seeds of Citrullus lanatus Fruits

Abstract

Citrullus lanatus is a major horticultural plant grown for its sweet, lush and juicy fruit in warm regions worldwide. The pulp of C. lanatus is often consumed, neglecting its rinds and seeds that were assumed not to be edible. This study aims to evaluate the nutritional and therapeutic constituents of pulps, rinds and seeds of C. lanatus. The proximate, mineral, phytochemical and vitamin compositions of pulp, rind and seeds were analysed using standard methods. Mineral compositions for pulp namely sodium (98.12±0.01 mg/100g), phosphorus (22.25±0.00 mg/100g), potassium (88.12±0.01 mg/100g), magnesium (28.13±0.01 mg/100g) and zinc (12.58±0.01 mg/100g) were higher significantly compared to seeds and rind. All vitamins analysed vitamin B1 (0.16±0.00 mg/100g), vitamin A (1.00±0.00 mg/100g), vitamin B2 (0.14±0.00 mg/100g), vitamin B6 (0.15±0.00 mg/100g), vitamin B9 (0.79±0.00 mg/100g) and vitamin C (50.16±1.13 mg/100g) were significantly higher in pulp compared to seeds and rind, same for moisture content (14.14±0.02 mg/100g). A higher proportion of percentage phytochemicals (mg/100g mg/100g) terpenoid (0.26±0.51 mg/100g) and tannin (0.39±0.08 mg/100g) were observed in the rind of the C. lanatus compared to pulp and seeds. The result of this study showed that C. lanatus is among the few fruits in which no part is a waste but the pulp of C. lanatus contains the highest range of minerals and vitamins compared to rind and seeds needed by humans for their dietary needs and development.
