The above is a flipped lesson I started this past fall for the first time. One of the challenges with beginning band every year is the time it takes the first few days to go over how to set-up each instrument and how to care for instruments. Just before school started this year a fellow band director sent me a link to a YouTube channel for a band director that had created a series of videos for beginning band on how to set-up and care for each instrument as a project for her Masters. I've added these to my YouTube channel for students to view. They are assigned as homework the night before instruments are issued. Any student that does not watch it as homework views it on the class iPad in class.
Students then demonstrate their understanding by showing each other how to set-up their instrument. Those that struggle help each other out. They can rewatch the video on an iPad if needed. As a follow-up students will complete a Google form were they will explain the steps needed to set-up their individual instrument.
Here is the link to the Mrs. Jobst's Website for more beginning band video's.
