What we do:

The NIH Weightlifting Club (WLC) is an R&W sponsored club that was created to offer NIH employees an opportunity to learn and practice strength training exercises. The WLC’s training philosophy is that the proper use and execution of the basic free-weight exercises offers the most efficient path to health and fitness. The primary lifts that we practice and teach are: squats, deadlifts, Olympic style lifts (snatches, clean & jerk), presses (bench press and overhead pressing), and pulls (rowing and pull-ups).

What we offer:

The WLC operates a free-weight gym in Building T-39 (“The Loft”). For beginners, we offer formal, informal and peer coaching of fundamental weightlifting techniques in a supportive, friendly environment. For experienced lifters, we also offer coaching in Olympic style weightlifting, or simply a place to come lift and to share your knowledge. The WLC’s goal is to be a supportive group of people that help each other become more technically proficient, fit, strong and to have fun.

Who we are:

We have been an active R&W Club on the NIH Bethesda campus since 2011. Our members include a large number of novice lifters with less than 1-year experience, Olympic style lifters (most with no previous weightlifting experience before joining), power-lifters, and general strength/conditioning lifters that enjoy the friendly workout space. At present we have a diverse membership base with slightly more women than men.

Who should join:

All ages and experience levels are welcome – the WLC supports your workout at your pace. Beginners will learn and grow, while experienced lifters will have the opportunity to lift, lead, and inspire. But above all else, we’ll have fun!
