I'm Somebody 2008-2009

I'm Somebody Award is given by the captains and coaches for an outstanding "Redhawk-like" performance at the previous varsity dual or tournament.

11/26/2008: Joe Widman 285. Joe scored a third period fall against Neuqua Valley in a tough, hard-fought match by coming off the bottom. Great Job Joe!

11/29/2008: Kirk Cherep 125. Kirk scored a key decision 10-7 against Batavia to help the Redhawks defeat the Bulldogs for the first time in years. The freshman's victory was a big turning point in the day. Fantastic Kirk!

12/05/2008: Nick Santos 119. Nick scored a last second takedown hip toss to win by one at West Aurora. Nice work Nick!

12/06/2008: Tyler Haines 103. Tyler scored a fall in one minute to help the Redhawks defeat St. Charles East at the Mega Duals. Tyler stepped in at 103 for his first varsity matches. Way to go Tyler!

12/11/2008: Andy Kovalsky 140. Andy bumped up a weight class and scored a key win in Naperville Central's defeat of their cross town rivals Naperville North. Andy fought to a major decision in this match. Great leadership Andy!

12/12/2008: John Graeber 140. John returned to the NCHS line-up to score a big DVC pin against Glenbard East. John's pin helped the redhawks win their second conference dual in a row. Awesome John!

12/13/2008: Nick Weithman 215. Nick fired off four big victories in this efforts at the Hoffman Estates Tournament. With Nick's help and three individual titles by Andy Kovalsky, Adam Gebner, and Matt Burns helped the Redhawks bring home a runner up trophy in their first tournament of year. Excellent Nick!

12/20/2008: Adam Gebner 152. Adam won four matches to one loss at the Whitlatch Tournament in Hinsdale Central. Adam went 3-1 on the day and won with a strong 7-3 finish in his final match. Way to Fight Adam!

12/27/2008: Steve Bus 171. Steve used an escape and a takedown in the final period to win against Brother Rice. Steve won by a score of 3-1. Steve went 2-0 on the day. Great Job Steve!

1/03/2009: Josh Tardy 130. Josh scored an escape and a takedown in the final period to come from behind and win at 130 pounds. Josh's 5-3 victory is his first victory at the varsity level and helped Central to come from behind to win their tenth dual of the year. Congrats Josh!

1/08/2009: Joe Savina 160. Joe scored three takedowns and four nearfalls in route to a dominating 17-1 technical fall at DVC foe West Chicago. Joe's win added to the Redhawks commanding victory 62-9. Fantastic Joe!

1/09/2009: Joe Savina 160. Joe outscored his Glenbard North opponent 11-4 before scoring a fall in the third period. Joe was very aggressive in all positions scoring two takedowns, a reversal and two nearfalls. Keep It Up Joe!

1/10/2009: Nick Santos 119. Nick did not give up an offensive point in three duals at Sandburg. Nick won 7-3 against Mahomet-Seymour, 7-2 against Sandburg, and scored a first period fall against Hinsdale South. Nicely Done Nick!

1/17/2009: Andy Kovalsky 135. Andy scored two quick falls heading into the semifinals at the Mahomet-Seymour Bulldog Invitational. After a solid 6-1 victory, Andy advanced to the finals against Ernst of Mahomet. Down by one in the final period, Andy use a bar to score a nearfall and take a two point lead but Ernst scored a penalty and escape to send it to overtime. Andy won the championship with a double leg takedown in the extra period. Awesome Andy!

1/22/2009: Connor Marr 112. Connor scored a late takedown to win 5-3 at Wheaton Warrenville South. This was Connors first match back from his appendectomy and his win helped the Redhawks from from behind to win the DVC contest. Great Comeback Connor!

1/23/2009: Nick Weithman 215. Nick rose to the challenge on Senior Nigh vs. Wheaton North with a huge 2-1 victory to ice the dual against our DVC foes. Nick broke a 0-0 tie late in the third period with a reversal and held on to win. Nick's victory mathematically won the dual for the Redhawks. Way to Go Nick!

1/31/2009: Adam Gebner 152. Adam dominated the competition at 152 to become DuPage Valley Champion at 152 pounds. Adam won by scores of 10-0, 5-2, and 16-4 in three matches, giving up only a reversal in offensive points the entire tournament. Congratulations Adam!

2/7/2009: Redhawk Seniors. Four of the Five Redhawks Seniors advance to Sectionals with a stellar effort at the IHSA Regional tournament. Kalen Petty, Matt Burns, and Nick Weithman each made the finals while Joe Widman took 3rd. Connor Marr helped captain the team to a Championship. Great Leadership Seniors!

2/13-14/2009: Redhawk State Qualifiers. Three Central wrestlers will be participating at the IHSA State Tournament, the most since 1992. Andy Kovalsky, Adam Gebner and Joe Widman will be on the mat at the Assembly Hall. Congrats State Qualifiers!

2/20-21/2009: Adam Gebner. Adam defeated Carney of Granite City at the IHSA State Wrestling tournament to advance to the consolation semifinals and came within three points of being a state place-winner. Great Job Adam!

2/24/2009: Redhawk Seniors. The Naperville Redhawk five seniors had a banner night in the IHSA Dual Sectionals as three scored falls and the other two held off two of Leyden's best wrestlers. The win sends the Redhawks to Dual State for the first time in school history. Congrats Seniors!

2/28/2009: Redhawk Wrestlers. The Naperville Redhawk Wrestlers competed at the IHSA Dual State Tournament against eventual champion Oak Park River Forrest. The Rehawks fell 22-42, but not without a good battle. Congrats to all the 'Hawk wrestlers, their parents and fans for a fantastic season.
