When Bolingbrook lost in the finals, NCHS's team lead extended to 14.5 points. Senior Matt Hammack won a critical finals match head to head against Bolingbrook in the finals. Matt scored 4 takedowns in route to a 9-6 victory and the 112 pound championship. Matt is now a two time sectional qualifier. With the win, NCHS led the tournament by 18.5 points. At 125, Keenan Marr advanced to the finals after winning in the semifinals by fall. Keenen fought hard in the finals but came up short to take second place. Keenan is a first time sectional qualifier. Freshman Andy Kovalsky defeated his Bolingbrook opponent in the first round in a spectacular match 7-6. Bolingbrook cut into the lead further with the Redhawks holding by by 10.5 team points. Jon Coluzzi racked up two technical falls on his way to the finals. In two matches, Jon scored 32 points to his opponents' one. Jon is also a first time sectionals qualifier. Jon lost in the finals and finished in 2nd place. At the same time, Bolingbrook lost a very close match on the third place mat, so the team lead remained at 10.5 points. Bolingbrook was in prime position to take over the lead with their top guns on deck and a head to head battle at 160 pounds.

Chris Graeber made the finals at 160 with a bye and an easy 15-3 win in the semifinals. Only Brandon Guhrs of Bolingbrook stood in the way of a Regional championship. Gurhrs scored the first takedown and after a reversal by Guhrs to start the second period, Chris was behind 1-4. Chris earned his escape and final scored just at the end of the period to tie the match at 4. Chris choose down and quickly escaped for the 5-4 lead. Guhrs came on strong but Chris shut the door with another takedown with 45 seconds to go. Chris threw the legs in a rode him out to a victory and a championship. Chris, a junior, is now a two-time sectional qualifier and the win extended the Redhawk team lead to 14.5 points. Bolingbrook would have to win all of their remaining matches by fall to catch Central.

Stephen Graeber made the finals at 171 pounds and faced the number one seeded Todd Carroll of Downers Grove South in the finals. Stephen fell behind by a takedown late in the first period started the second period losing 0-2 in the down position. Stephen scored a reversal near the edge of the mat half way through the second period and rode Carroll out to send it tied to the third period. When Carroll chose down to start the period, the coached debated on having Stephen let Carroll up and give up the lead and go for the victory with a takedown. However, Stephen looked in control on top and rode Carroll out for the entire third period to send it to sudden-victory overtime. Carroll took a bad shot and Stephen immediately capitalized with a spin to a near cradle and threw Carroll on his back for the 7-2 victory. Stephen win mathematically assured Naperville Central the Regional trophy. Stephen is a two time sectional qualifier and first time Regional champ.

Sophomore Tyler Gamons went 0-2 in the tournament wrestling up a weight class at 189 pounds. Anthony Lewis lost in the semifinals to highly ranked Onyegbule of Bolingbrook in one of the most exciting match of the day. Lewis, down by three, threw Onyegbule on his back late in the third period, but the Bolingbrook wrestler reversed Lewis to his back just as Lewis reversed back as the buzzer sounded. When all was said and done, Lewis fell short 7-8. Anthony fought back to the third place match, but lost in another tight battle 2-3 to take 4th place. Christian Lynch went 1-2 in the tournament, but his win was a pin against Starnes of Bolingbrook in the wrestle-backs, a huge victory at the time.

Redhawks 4th in DVC Tournament

Naperville Central ended the regular season in style by taking 4th in the DVC tournament at Naperville North High School on January 27th, 2007. It was the highest finish for the Redhawks in 12 years. Central won 25 matches to 21 losses. Six of the victories avenged earlier losses in the season. Nine of the 13 Redhawks finished the tournament in the top 4. There were too many wrestlers who had outstanding performances to choose an "I'm Somebody" award, so this "Somebody" goes out to all those who help the wrestlers wrestle their best all year long. Parents, Coaches, Pin Pals, Volunteers, etc... YOU ARE SOMEBODY!

Connor Marr had a fantastic tournament at 103 pounds taking 3rd. Connors hard work in practice paid off with three close decisions including his last victory against Alexander of Glenbard East 8-3, whom he lost last week. At 112 pounds, Matt Hammack scored a victory in the first round before losing by injury default in the second round. He was delegated to 6th place. Matt should be back for the Regionals next week. Chase Muscato battled both opponents and his own nagging back to take 4th place.

Chase nearly knocked off Josh Zinzer of West Aurora in a winner-take-all throw contest. Chase came up short 10-11, but won his next match before bowing out of the tournament to prepare for the Regionals. Keenan Marr fought in perhaps the toughest bracket to a 4th place finish. After a bye and a lost to top seed Chase of Glenbard North, Keenen defeated Hood of West Aurora for the second time in three meetings to secure 4th.

Taylor Patton drew the eventual champ in the first round but won in the wrestle-backs and nearly defeated Hensen of Glenbard East late in the third period. Talyor ended 6th in the tournament. Riley Roberts had his best tournament of the year at 140 pounds. Riley started the tournament right with a big 5-2 victory against Munro of Wheaton North, an opponent he has split against this year. After a hard fought loss to Drendle of West Aurora, Riley scored a late fall followed by a fantastic 5-3 victory verses Callahan of Glenbard East, another wrestler who upended him earlier this year. Riley ended 3rd despite being unseeded.

Senior Adam Kamykowski finished 2-2 for the day, good enough for 4th place. Adam beat Welch of West Chicago and repeated a victory against Zeh of Glenbard East. At 152 pounds, Jon Coluzzi, Mr. Consistancy, marched into the finals with two quick wins - a 25 second fall and an injury default. Chris Graeber stole the show at 160 pounds. After taking care of business with two quick pins, Chris faced a tough challenge in the finals against Wahrman of Glenbard North. Chris scored early, but was only up by one point late in the third period. Rather that holding on, Chris scored a clinching takedown to claim to gold by a score of 7-4. Brother Stephen had a great day himself. After a first round lost to Adeszko of Wheaton North, Stephen marched through the wrestle-backs, securing two pins before facing Adeszko again for third place. This time Stephen dominated with an exciting 9-7 win and a 3rd place finish.

Sophomore Tyler Gamons gave the old-college-try at 189 pounds in his first varsity experiences. The back up 171-pounder lost two matches but held the lead in his second match for a good portion of the match. At 215 pounds, Anthony Lewis had 4 very tough battles but came out on top in three of them by scores of 6-3, 7-5 in overtime, and 6-2 for a third place finish. Anthony defeated Fitzgerald of Wheaton North for third, a wrestler he lost to just two weeks ago. At heavyweight, Christian Lynch lost two matches but scored a key pin in the second period against Henninger of Naperville North to take 7th place.
