NCHS loses to Downers Grove South 25-40

Naperville Central wrestling kicks off the 2015-2016 season by going 2-1 at home on a Saturday morning. In the first dual, Central won all 10 matches contested, 7 by fall. Lane Tech forfeited 4 weight classes. Nick Keating, Jake Keating, Luc Jandt, Luke Russell, Cam Hayes, John Szczap, and Alex Hunter all recorded pins. Derek McDaniel scored a technical fall racking up 10 takedowns in his match. Ben Cianchetti scored a major decision 11-3 and Christian Nussbaum locked down a 4-3 victory. Nick Keating, Russell, Sczcap, and Cianchetti all won their first varsity matches. Lane Tech was penalized a team point in the contest.

The Redhawks followed up the big win with a victory against Batavia. Central won 8 of 13 matches including five wins by fall. Steven Bumpus scored three 3rd period points to win his first varsity match 4-2 at 145 pounds. Alex Raulicks scored a 1st period fall for his first varsity win as well. Alex wrestles at 195 pounds. Shuji Mizoguchi locked down a pin at 113 pounds.

Downers Grove South won all three duals on the day, downing NCHS in the third dual. Cam Hayes pinned all three opponents in the quad, winning by fall in the first period against DGS. Christian Nussbaum is 3-0 after a 7-2 decision in the final match. Shuji Mizoguchi looked tough, winning by a score of 15-6 for his third victory on the day. Both Keatings, Nick and Jake, scored falls against DGS. The brothers won all six matches, four by fall and one more by technical fall.

The NCHS junior varsity team won all three duals at the same event.

Naperville Central Wrestles Glenbard North at Home

NCHS 13 – GN 45

December 4, 2015

Naperville Central hosted Glenbard North at home and lost by a score of 13-45. Sophomore Nick Keating lost the opening match by a score of 3-10. At 126 pounds Gomez of Glenbard North scored three takedowns in the opening period but Jake Keating scored four points in the second period to make the score 7-9. Keating pulled to within one point midway through the third period, but Gomez scored the final takedown to win the exciting bout 8-11.

Glenbard North won the next eight bouts, but then senior Alex Hunter scored a fall in the first period to put Central on the board. Junior Christian Nussbaum, competing at 285 pounds scored a late takedown on a powerful double leg drive and held on to win 6-5. After Glenbard North took the 106 pound match, Shuji Mizoguchi scored two takedowns and a couple of sets of back points to win the final match of the night 9-0.

The Redhawks (4-3, 0-1 DVC) won two of three duals at the Megaduals held at Wheaton Warrenville South HS. The Hawks opened with an impressive win against St. Charles East. Alex Hunter and Christian Nussbaum opened the day with two first period pins. St. Charles answered with a fall at 106 pounds. Senior Shuji Mizoguchi earned a bonus point with a 12-4 major decision. Nick Keating dropped an overtime decision but his brother Jake scored fall in the first period to give the Redhawks a 22-9 team score lead.

St. Charles East answered with two wins at 132 and 138. Senior Steven Bumpus locked down a very important fall at 145 pounds. The opponents answered with a fall to pull to within three in the team score, but the Redhawks earned a major decision from Cam Hayes and a fall from John Szczap to take a 13 point team score lead. St. C. East won the last two matches, but it wasn’t enough to cover the deficit.

NCHS lost to Rockton Hononegah. Shuji Mizoguchi won his second match of the day with a pin at the 1:22 mark. Jake Keaton scored five points to open his match and held on to win 7-5 at 126 pounds. Luc Jandt looked solid with a 12-4 major decision at 132 pounds.

Naperville Central bounced back with a solid win against Oswego. Kyle Guttosch scored four takedowns in route to an 8-3 win. Mizoguchi won his third on the day with another first period win. Not to be outdone, Jake Keating scored his third win 17-5. Karolis Ugintas won his first ever varsity match scoring five points in the third period for an 8-4 decision.

Steven Bumpus earned a pin at 145 pounds. Cam Hayes put on a clinic on his feet with 10 pins for a 24-8 technical fall. NCHS had three wins at the top weight classes. Alex Raulicks won 5-2, Alex Hunter and Christian Nussbaum each won by pin at 220 and 285.

The JV1 team won all three of their duals at St. Charles East High School, the last a squeaker 37-36 against St. Charles East. They beat Oswego and West Aurora as well. The JV2 team wrestled at West Aurora High School and finished 1-2 in duals on the day.

The freshman team took 4th place at the Lyons Freshman Tournament. Colin Baumgartner, Luke Russell, Jackson Punzel and Ben Cianchetti all took home gold at their respective weight classes. Punzel and Cianchetti both tied for the fastest pin award. Luke Russell was named the outstanding wrestler.

Naperville Central Defeats Neuqua Valley

NCHS 42 – NV 24

The Redhawks (5-3, 1-1 in DVC) traveled to Neuqua Valley and defeated the Wildcats by a score of 42-24 for their first conference win in the 2015-16 season.

After Alex Hunter received a forfeit at 220 pounds, Christian Nussbaum scored a technical fall at heavyweight, winning by a score of 22-5. Nuss scored six takedowns and locked down three sets of nearfall in his match. Swinging up to the lightweights, Kyle Guttosch dropped a 1-6 decision at 106 pounds, but then the Redhawks won the next four matches. Senior Shuji Mizoguchi compiled three takedowns in route to a 9-3 decision at 113, then Nick Keating fired away at 120 pounds winning a 17-5 major victory. Jake Keating muscled his way to a 18-3 technical fall at 126 and senior Luc Jandt picked up a forfeit at 132 pounds.

The Hawks sent out their up-and-comers in three of the next four weight classes. Freshman Luke Russell rode his opponent out in the third period, but lost 1-7 at 138 pounds. Sophomore Derek McDaniel and freshman Jackson Punzel were pinned at 152 and 160 pounds respectively. It was Jackson’s first attempt at varsity. Senior Steven Bumpus was able to score a late takedown to win in overtime at 145 pounds by a score of 6-4.

Cam Hayes coasted his way to a 10-1 win at 170 pounds. Brad Klass was pinned at 182 in his first challenge at varsity. Alex Raulicks finished the dual in style with a first period fall.

The JV 1 team and JV2 teams both won their duals against Neuqua Valley while the freshman lost in their efforts.

Central defeats Metea Valley

NCHS 39 – MVHS 28

In a battle of DVC schools, Naperville Central (6-3, 2-1 in DVC) came out on top against Metea Valley at MVHS by a score of 39 to 28.

Christian Nussbaum continued his success by scoring an escape and penalty point in the second period of overtime in his match. He added a takedown in period three of overtime to win 5-3. Kyle Guttosch scored a takedown and three back-points with a standing cradle to open his match at 106 pounds and held on to win by decision 8-2. Shuji Mizoguchi added a pin in his match at 113 pounds. His pin came in the second period. NCHS held a 12-0 lead in the team score. Metea earned their first win against Nick Keating at 120 pounds.

Jake Keating earned a quick pin at 126 pounds and Luc Jandt held on to win him match by decision 7-4. With the team score at 21-6, Metea won two matches in a row. The first came against Luke Russell and the second against Steven Bumpus. Derek McDaniel, wrestling at 152 pounds, was down 3-5 going into the third period – scored an escape and two takedowns to win. The last TD came with just 10 seconds left in the match. The excitement continued when freshman Jackson Punzel earned his first varsity win at 160 pounds. Jackson tallied four takedowns in his effort and put his team up 27-16.

Cam Hayes scored a fall just 22 seconds into his match and then Ben Cianchetti matched his teammate with a pin of his own in just 22 seconds. That fall was enough to insure the victory for the Redhawks. Metea Valley won the last two matches by fall against Alex Raulickis and Alex Hunter at 195 and 220 pounds.

The Junior Varsity team won their contest against 38-19 and the freshman won by a score of 42-36. Metea did not field a JV2 team, but the Redhawks won four of six exhibition matches contested.

Naperville Central took 2nd place at the 14 team Hoffman Estates Tournament on Saturday. NCHS was winning the tournament after round 1 and was in first place after three weight classes in the final round, but Niles Notre Dame pulled away after that when they had four champions. They won the event by 14 team points. The third place team, Bolingbrook finished 48 points behind Central.

The Redhawks had four finalists in the tournament and 11 of the 13 participants placed in the top six. Senior Cam Hayes won the event in style by scoring a 15-0 technical fall in the championship match. Cam dominated his opponents at 160, scoring a pin and three technical falls on the day. Senior Alex Hunter also won the event at 220 pounds. This is Alex’s first time winning a varsity tournament. Seeded third, Alex locked down a pin in the quarterfinals and won 4-2 in the semifinals. In the championship match, he was able to ride his opponent out to win again by a 4-2 score.

Jake Keating and Luke Russell both made the finals and took 2nd. Jake scored two falls before losing in the finals by a 2-8 score. Freshman Luke Russell put together a very exciting tournament, winning in come-from-behind fashion several times and scoring pins in three matches to make the finals. Unseeded, he took 2nd, losing by a score of 0-7 in his last match.

Three NCHS wrestlers took 3rd at the tournament. Freshman Kyle Guttosch scored a fall in his place match. Kyle had a very good day, winning two matches at 106 pounds. Shuji Mizoguchi lost in the semifinals but earned a fall in his bronze medal match at 113. Steven Bumpus, unseeded, got to pins to make the semifinals and then won 3-2 in his third place match.

Luc Jandt took 4th place at 132 pounds. Nick Keating took 5th and Derek McDaniel and Christian Nussbaum both took 6th place.

The NCHS JV team won the Streamwood Dual Tournament on Saturday. They beat Highland Park 63-0 and then South Elgin 35-18. In the finals, the Redhawks defeated DeKalb 48-27 to bring home the trophy. The freshman traveled to Lyons Township again, this time in a dual effort. They won 26 of 33 total matches on the day.

Naperville Central Defeats Waubonsie Valley

Naperville Central improves to 3-1 in the DVC (7-4 overall) after defeating Waubonsie Valley at home. Central sweeps the D204 schools in duals. Christian Nussbaum was awarded a forfeit at 220. Alex Hunter started the dual at heavyweight and battled to a 1-7 loss. Kyle Guttosch scored a first period pin at 106. The freshman used a 2-on-1 to gain advantage on with a takedown and went right to work on top for the fall. Shuji Mizoguchi also scored a pin at 113 pounds. Sophomore Nick Keating came out firing and locked down a cradle for a pin at 120. His brother racked up 16 first period points and scored a pin at the end of the period. Luc Jandt got the fifth pin in a row this night. That made the team score 36-3. Luke Russell fought to the third period but lost by fall.

Steven Bumpus had a good night. He won by technical fall at 145 after accumulating 21 points mostly by fireman’s carry. Derek McDaniel was defeated at 152 pounds but he battled hard. Jackson Punzel had a very good night scoring multiple times on his feet before securing a stick. Senior Cam Hayes wrested at 170 pounds and found himself in a very tight match. Both wrestlers traded two takedowns before Cam scored on a beautiful cross knee pick and locked down a pin. Ben Cianchetti won by forfeit. Alex Raulickis was up 3-0 but was cradled and pinned in the second period.

The JV1, JV2 teams both won while the freshman team was defeated by WV.

On Saturday the JV1 team sweep their duals at home against Bolingbrook, Joliet Central and Oak Forrest. The JV2 (sophomore) team wrestled at the Maine South Tournament and the freshman won two of three duals at Hinsdale South.

Naperville Central swept all five duals to win the Bradley-Bourbonnais Dual Team Wrestling Tournament. The team is now 12-3 in duals on the year. In the competition, the Redhawks won 42 actual contested matches and lost just 10. Of the 42 matches won, 28 were won by fall. The Hawks scored 79 total takedowns while just giving up only 25.

Alex Hunter shined wrestling at heavyweight. Alex won all five matches, four by fall. Luc Jandt won five matches as well, four by fall and one by forfeit. Other five match winners were Shuji Mizoguchi (three pins), Christian Nussbaum (two pins), and Steven Bumpus (one fall).

Four additional wrestlers finished undefeated on the day. Jake Keating won four matches, picking up two wins by fall and a win by forfeit. Derek McDaniel won all three of the matches he competed in. Joe Lopez and Colin Baumgartner both won a match, both locking down their first varsity wins.

Finishing with four wins were John Szczap and Ben Cianchetti. Both wrestlers won three of their matches by fall. Nick Keating won three matches – two coming by forfeit and the other by pin. Kyle Guttosch and Luke Russell each ended the day with a record of 2-2. Jackson Punzel earned a pin and finished 1-1. Mujtaba Ahmed lost the only match competed in by a score of 6-7.

Naperville Central closes out 2015 with a sweep of a quad at home. NCHS is now 15-3 on the year. Central defeated St. Charles North in the opening dual by a score of 63-13. Central won five of the seven matches contested, scoring four wins by pin. In the second contest, NCHS downed Plainfield East by a score of 54-11. The Redhawks won 10 of 12 matches and five of those wins were by pin. Central outscored PE 23-6 in takedowns. In the final match, the Redhawks defeated Geneseo by a score of 52-29. NC won nine matches with seven coming by fall.

Finishing 3-0 on the day was Kyle Guttosch, Shuji Mizoguchi, Luc Jandt, Derek McDaniel, Jackson Punzel, Ben Cianchetti, and Christian Nussbaum. Jandt had a particularly good day scoring three wins by fall. Mizoguchi locked down two pins on one win by technical fall. Cianchetti, a freshman wrestling at 182 pounds, scored two wins by fall.

The Redhawks open the 2016 calendar year with three dual meet wins. The match took place in the main gym of Naperville Central High School. Central finishes the week 11-0 in duals and improves to 18-3 on the season. In the first contest, NCHS beat Schaumburg 52-30. Central won nine matches in the dual with eight of those wins by fall. Only three matches reached the third period. Central matched the effort of nine wins in the second dual by defeating Libertyville. Central won the first four weight classes and held at 18-0 team score lead early. At 145, Steven Bumpus scored a late third period takedown to secure a 3-1 win. Ben Cianchetti and Nick Keating both earned falls in the contest while Shuji Mizoguchi earned a technical fall in the second period.

In the three matches Central beat Crystal Lake South 63-15. Jake Keating scored nine takedowns and a 23-8 technical fall all in the first period of his match. NCHS earned four pins in the match.

Kyle Guttosch, Shuji Mizoguchi, Jake Keating, Luc Jandt, Steven Bumpus and Christian Nussbaum all finished the day 3-0. Luc Jandt finished a very impressive week adding two more pins to his total. Jackson Punzel and Alex Hunter both finished 2-1 on the day, but both wins by both wrestlers were pins.

The NCHS JV team also finished the day 3-0 in the same contest. The freshman team competed at Hinsdale South in a tournament. Cam Palmer came away with a tournament championship.

Naperville Central Defeats Crosstown Rival Naperville North in Thriller.

NCHS 33 – NNHS 32

January 7, 2016

Naperville Central (19-3, 4-1 in DVC) squeaked by its sister school Naperville North in a thriller. The contest was viewed under the spotlight in front of a packed house at Naperville Central High School. Starting at 170 pounds Schmult defeated John Szczap by a score of 1-16. Ben Cianchetti was pinned in the second period by Martin at 182 pounds. North won their third match in a row when DiRienzo defeated Alex Raulicks 11-4. Raulicks earned a late escape to lose by seven points.

With the Huskies up 0-14 in the team score, the Redhawks got on the board with two wins at the heavy weights. Christian Nussbaum used two first period takedowns and held on to win 5-3 at 215 pounds. Alex Hunter broke a 0-0 tie with an escape in the second period of his match, and then he scored a take down and a fall. The win pulled the Hawks to within 5 points, 9-14. North got back in the win column when the younger Kruk scored six first period points and battled to a 2-8 decision verses Kyle Guttosch at 106 pounds.

In perhaps the match of the night, Shuji Mizoguchi defeated Van Poucke by a score of 9-8. Van Poucke opened the scoring with a takedown but Mizoguchi answered with a reversal and two point nearfall to go up 4-2. In the second period Mizoguchi scored another reversal with nearfall, but Van Poucke came back with a reversal and three point nearfall to make the score 8-7 at the end of the second period. Mizoguchi attempted several turning combinations in the third period but all he was able to earn was a point for stalling. As time expired in the match, Van Poucke nearly reversed Mizoguchi, but was only awarded an escape for loss of control. The win made the team score 12-17 in favor of the Huskies.

Central took their first lead of the night when sophomore 120 pounder Nick Keating pinned Fisher in the first period. Jake Keating won by forfeit at 126 pounds putting the Hawks up by seven, 24-17. Luke Jandt was pinned by the older brother Kruk pulling North to within 1 on the team score. Steven Bumpus earned 10 points in the second period and fought on to win by a major decision 14-3 at 138 pounds.

The Huskies would not go away. McKenna of NN scored a 4-11 victory at 145 pounds and Cameli earned a fall verses Jackson Punzel at 152 pounds. The two wins put North up 28-32. Senior captain Cameron Hayes scored a takedown and three point nearfall to begin his match against Weber. He added another takedown to go up 7-1 at the end of the first period. Picking neutral, Hayes scored two more takedowns to go up 11-2 going into the third period. After an intentional escape, Hayes earn a takedown and got two tilt nearfalls for the 18-3 technical fall. The win scored five team points to make the final team score 33-32.

Naperville North won at the JV1, JV2 and Freshman levels. Next up the Hawks will visit DVC foe Wheaton Warrenville South.

Naperville Central Defeats Wheaton Warrenville South

NCHS 40 – WWS 24

Naperville Central won its second dual in as many nights, this time over DVC foe Wheaton Warrenville South by a score of 40-24. The Redhawks are now 20-3 on the year and 5-1 in the DVC. Central has won 17 duals in a row. It was senior night at WWS

Joe Lopez picked up a forfeit at 126 at the start of the dual, then Jake Keating won by technical fall at 132 pounds against Kerth by a score of 61-1. Senior Luc Jandt battled but lost wrestling at 138 pounds by a score of 2-7 to Howland. Fellow senior Steven Bumpus fell behind by three early in his match to Berry but fought back to win 8-5. The Tigers came back when Macellaio pinned Derek McDaniel in the 145 pound weight class.

Cam Hayes wrestled for another technical fall at 160 pounds against McClearn. He scored a reversal and nearfall in the final period to secure his win by a score of 21-5. With the team score at 19-9, WWS won at 170, 182 and 195 pounds to take the lead 19-24. John Szczap was pinned by Niyigena. Ben Cianchetti was defeated 3-9 verses Hopkins and Alex Raulicks lost by fall Leonard.

The Redhawks then won the last five matches. Christian Nussbaum started the winning streak fighting for a 3-1 win with a late third period takedown against Ferrek. Alex Hunter took advantage of being in the top position scoring a much needed fall at heavyweight verses Wilson. At 106 pounds, Kyle Guttosch used a 2-on-1 tie for a takedown and that was enough points for his win against Burgess by a score of 2-0. Shuji Mizoguchi improved to 24-1 on the year with a fall at 113 pounds. He pinned Edwards. Nick Keating put the icing on the dual with a late reversal to win 6-4 against Tesfay.

The JV1, JV2 and freshman teams all won against Wheaton South.

Naperville Central won 33 of 40 matches at the quad held at Downers Grove North. Central now has a record of 23-3 and 5-1 in the DVC. The three dual wins make it 20 duals in a row for the Redhawks. Central won all five duals contested this week.

NCHS defeated Champaign Central in the first dual, winning 12 matches and losing just two. The Redhawks earned five pins against the Maroons. In the second contest of the morning, Central won 13 of 14 matches. They added six more pins and a win by technical fall. The Hawks downed the host school Downers Grove South, winning 10 of 14 matches. They added seven more pins and one more technical fall.

Finishing 3-0 were Shuji Mizoguchi, Jake Keating, Luc Jandt, Steven Bumpus, Cam Hayes, and Christian Nussbaum. Derek McDaniel and John Szczap both ended undefeated with two wins. Kyle Guttosch, Nick Keating, Jackson Punzel, and Alex Raulicks also turned in two wins on the day.

The NCHS JV1 team took 5th place at the Bolingbrook Tournament. Brad Catalono won the tournament at heavyweight. The NCHS JV2 team took 5th at the Bill Young Invitational held at NCHS. Michael Norwood and Steven Chobak brought home golds.

Naperville Central Takes First Place at Marty Williams Invitational

Naperville Central traveled to Mahomet-Seymour High School and brought home the championship at the 24-team Marty Williams Invitational. NCHS outscored the second place team by nearly 44 team points. This is the second tournament victory for the Redhawks this year. They won the Bradley-Bourbonnais tournament on December 29th.

Wrestlers in each weight class were placed in pools and then based on their performance in the pool, were placed in appropriate brackets. For example, a wrestler finishing 2-0 in his pool was placed in a pool A with other wrestlers finishing 2-0. Same for 1-1 pool finishers (pool B) and 0-2 finishers (pool C). All wrestling continues to a place (all wrestlers place).

From Naperville Central, Mizoguchi, Jake Keating, Jandt, McDaniel, Punzel, Hayes, Hunter, Nussbaum, and Catalano all qualified for the A bracket, thus placed in the top 8.

Senior Captain Cam Hayes won all five of his matches to bring home the gold at 160 pounds. He won by scores of 12-3 and 22-7 in pool competition, then qualified for the finals by defeating Fisher from Yorkville by fall and getting past Garcia from Prairie Central by a score of 16-12. In the championship match, Hayes scored a takedown and nearfall and that was enough for a 5-0 victory. Also qualifying for the finals was Jake Keating. Keating scored two falls in pool play, then earned decisions of 11-4 and 13-8 make the finals. In the championship match, Keating fell behind by five quickly after being thrown to his back, but he battled back in the match and only lost by two points, 7-9.

Shuji Mizoguchi won three matches, two in his pool (both by pin) to take third place. He won in his place match by a score of 15-4. Christian Nussbaum finished 4-1 and took 5th place. He was caught and pinned by the eventual 220 pound champion in the first round of the bracket competition. He won all other four matches by fall. Alex Hunter finished 3-2, Derek McDaniel and Jackson Punzel finished 2-2. Hunter, McDaniel and Punzel all finished in 6th place. Luc Jandt won his final match by fall for a 7th place finish. Brad Catalano entered the tournament as an alternate at 285 pounds earned 2 varsity matches to earn a 7th place finish. His winning scores were 4-2 and 3-2.

Nick Keating and Ben Cianchetti both won the B bracket and finished in 9th place. Nick Keating won four matches including a pin in the semifinals. Cianchetti also had four wins and scored bonus team points with two pins. Luke Russell was 3-2 and finished in 10th place. Russell battled to a 4-3 triple overtime victory in the quarterfinals. Mujtaba Ahmed also earned a 10th place finish. He was not scored upon in his two wins, 4-0 and 9-0.

Colin Baumgartner ended in 11th place, Joe Lopez in 14th place. Both Alex Raulicks and Brad Klass won the C bracket and ended in 17th place. Cam Palmer won a match by fall and took 18th place. Sam Piazza scored two falls and finished in 21st place.

Naperville Central Defeats Lake Park on Senior Night

In the final home dual of the season, Naperville Central defeated Lake Park by a score of 65 to 12. Central won 4 of the 5 matches contested. All other weight classes are forfeited.

Starting at 138, Steven Bumpus scored three takedowns and added a two-point nearfall and held on to win 8-7. After Derek McDaniel won by forfeit, Jackson Punzel won 8-5 at 152 pounds. Punzel scored a takedown in each period and also scored a two-point nearfall. Cesar Anguiano picked up the forfeit at 160 pounds pushing Cam Hayes up to 170. Hayes won by technical fall scoring 12 takedowns in two periods. Ben Cianchetti picked up a forfeit at 182 pounds. Alex Raulickis lost by fall at 195.

Christian Nussbaum and Alex Hunter both earned forfeits. Kyle Guttosch, still nursing an upper body injury, was held out of his match at 106 pounds, giving Lake Park a forfeit. In the final contested match, Shuji Mizoguchi earned a first period fall at 113 pounds. Nick Keating, Jake Keating, and Luc Jandt also scored wins by forfeit.

Seniors and their families were recognized prior to the dual. Posters and signs were hung celebrating their accomplishments. The seniors are: Shuji Mizoguchi, Luc Jandt, Steven Bumpus, Cameron Hayes, John Szczap, Kyle Hildebrand and Alex Hunter. Also, wrestling manager Josclyn Guzman and videographer Tom Hamill were also recognized.

The Redhawks won the JV1 dual, losing only one match and giving up one forfeit. NCHS won the JV2 dual by forfeit. Lake Park won the freshman dual.

Naperville Central concludes the dual meet portion of the 2015-2016 campaign with a record of 24-4 (6-2 in DVC) after losing at Wheaton North.

Steven Bumpus lost by two points to start the dual at 138 pounds. Bumpus scored three takedowns in the final period to close a six point deficit gap, but it wasn’t enough. Derek McDaniel dropped a 3-11 major decision at 145 pounds. Jackson Punzel was disqualified in his match at 152. Cam Hayes lost a 2-10 match at 160.

After John Szczap was pinned at 170 pounds, junior Christian Nussbaum scored five takedowns including one in the final few seconds to win by eight 11-3. Alex Hunter scored a takedown and a set of nearfall points in the first period of his match, but he was unable to hold on, losing 5-9. At 106 pounds, Kyle Guttosch gave up a pin.

Shuji Mizoguchi defeated his opponent by fall at 113 pounds. Nick Keating was pinned at 120. Jake Keating was able to rack up five takedowns and a few sets of nearfall before winning by pin at 126 pounds. Wheaton North won the final match at 132 pounds, a 5-8 decision over Luc Jandt. Wheaton North also won at the JV1, JV2 and freshman levels.

The Naperville Central JV teams competed in the DVC tournaments held at Wheaton Warrenville South and Wheaton North respectively. At the JV1 tournament, freshman Luke Russell locked down three consecutive pins to take first place in the 138 pound weight class. Cade Wilke and Khalid Khatib both made the finals at 138 and 160 respectively, both taking second. Jake Viehmann, Mujtaba Ahmed, Karolis Ugintas and Brad Catalano all took 3rd place. The Redhawks won 30 matches in the tournament and lost 19. Glenbard North won the tournament by 10 points over Wheaton North.

At the JV2 tournament Sam Piazza and Michael Norwood both came away with the gold. Cameron Palmer took 2nd place. Smitas and Hu both took 3rd place.

Jake Keating DVC Champ

Jake Keating was crowned champion at the 2016 DVC championships held at Glenbard North High School. Jake competed at 120 pounds. Seeded first, Jake won his preliminary match by fall over Fisher of Naperville North, and then got by Ariza of Metea Valley in the semifinals by a score of 6-3. In the championship match, Keating put on a show, scoring early and often and locking down a fall for the gold.

Cam Hayes finished in third place in the event. He just missed defeating Czernek of Glenbard North in the semifinals, losing by a score of 2-3. Hayes bounced back with a 21-6 technical fall verses Matar of Naperville North for the bronze.

Luc Jandt finished with a record of 2-2 and took 4th place. Jandt won both of his matches by fall. In one of those matches, he pinned Chesney of Wheaton North, an opponent he lost last week. Also taking 4th was 285 pounder Alex Hunter. Hunter won 5-1 against Yanan of Wheaton North in the preliminary round, avenging a loss to him last week.

Two Redhawks finished in 5th place. Shuji Mizoguchi scored a fall in his final match to take 5th at 113 pounds. Steven Bumpus also won by pin in his last match for 5th at 138 pounds.

Taking 6th place for NCHS were Kyle Guttosch at 106, Nick Keating at 126, Derek McDaniel at 145, and Ben Cianchetti at 182 pounds. Alex Raulicks won his last bout in the tournament to take 7th place.

Naperville Central Sends Four to IHSA Sectionals

Naperville Central will be sending four wrestlers to the IHSA Sectional Tournament after each finished 2nd in the IHSA Regional Tournament held at Naperville North High School. The team finished in 5th place. Marion won the tournament.

Senior Luc Jandt made the jump to the 126 pound weight class and it payed off as the senior qualified for the finals after a 15-9 victory against Doranski of Batavia in the semifinals. Jandt, seeded 3rd, opened an early 5-0 lead and cruised to the victory. He won in the first round by fall. Jandt was pinned in the finals but his season will continue.

Senior Captain Cam Hayes scored an 8-1 victory against McClearn of WWS in his semifinal match to qualify for his 2nd sectional tournament of his career. Hayes opened the tournament with a fall in the first period of his first match. Hayes was defeated by Jimenez of Marmion in the finals round 3-4 to take his silver at 160 pounds.

Jake Keating just missed earning a regional championship, losing 5-6 in the finals to Jacquez from West Aurora. Keating, junior 120, qualified for the finals with a 11-9 sudden victory against Uniza of Metea Valley in the semifinals. The former state qualifier earned a first period fall in the first round.

Christian Nussbaum earned his first trip to sectionals with a second period fall against Gumza of West Aurora. Nuss, wrestling at 220, had a solid 9-4 victory in the opening round against Mondesi of Waubonsie Valley. Nussbaum was upended by Uzumecki of Batavia in the championship match.

Shuji Mizoguchi took 4th place, just missing qualifying for his third sectional. The senior lost 0-7 in the third place match to Chumbley of Marmion. Mizoguchi scored a second period fall against Bijarro of West Aurora to qualify for the blood round. Mizoguchi finished 2-2. The 113 pounder completed a fall in his first match.

Kyle Guttosch also had a missed opportunity for sectionals. He took fourth after losing 2-13 against Kruk of Naperville North for bronze. Guttosch's path to that match was through that wrestle-backs where he pinned Corbin of WA and defeated Burgess of WWS 6-5.

Three seniors saw their season efforts come to a close at the Regionals. All three finished 1-2. Steven Bumpus, 138, won 7-6 verses Howland of WWS. Bump scored a late reversal for that victory. John Szczap won 14-4 in the prelim round against Sarangi of East Aurora for his win. Alex Hunter, a three year starter won in the quarter-final wrestle-back for his final win.

Derek McDaniel earned two wins in the tournament - wrestling at 145. McDaniel scored a 10-4 win against O'Donnell of WV and a 9-6 win verses Southland of Batavia. In the later match, McDaniel got s takedown and back-points in the final seconds for the win.

Unseeded Alex Raulicks beat the four seed Mayhew 7-4 at 195 pounds for a win. Freshman Ben Cianchetti locked down a first period fall verses Ruiz of East Aurora. Jackson Punzel wrestled at 152 and Nick Keating stepped up and wrestled at 132.

Naperville Central has two qualifiers for the IHSA State Wrestling Tournament. Both Jake Keating and Cam Hayes placed in the top four at the Sectional tournament held at Batavia High School. Christian Nussbaum and Luc Jandt also competed in the tournament for the Redhawks.

Jake Keating qualified for the state tournament for the second time after taking third place at sectionals. Keating won five out of six matches. In round one on Friday, Keating defeated Amato of Montini by a score of 5-1. Later that night, Keating was defeated by Stearns of Sandburg 0-7. Stearns moved on to win the tournament. On Saturday, Keating defeated Granedo of Brother Rice by a technical fall 17-2. Keating then won by fall against Sanchez of Revis at the 2:50 mark. That win put Keating in the “blood round” (if you win, you have qualified for state, if you lose you have been eliminated). Keating faced off with Dado of Marist. Keating jumped out to a big lead. Dado did not fade. He fought back to within two points. Keating was able to hold on for a 15-13 victory which punched his ticket to Champaign. In the bronze medal match, Keating fought to a 9-1 major decision over Garcia of Lyons. Jake Keating finished a perfect 4-0 on Saturday.

Cam Hayes earned his name on the state qualifier board after finishing in fourth place. On Friday, Hayes won both matches to qualify for the semifinals. Hayes opened the tournament with a 8-2 victory against Leflone-Chapman of Downers Grove South. Hayes then pinned Capron Brother Rice. On Saturday, Hayes just missed defeating Schneider of Sandburg, giving up a late takedown to fall 1-3. Cam Hayes bounced back with a big win in the blood round, gaining a big lead before pinning Benson of Thornton Fractional-South. In the third place match, Cam was defeated by Jimenez of Marmion by a score of 0-8.

Keating and Hayes will compete at the IHSA State Tournament starting Thursday, February 18th. Details will be available regarding their starting times later. Live video of their matches will be available online.

Christian Nussbaum finished the tournament winning three of five matches and just missed qualifying for state. Nussbaum defeated Brown of Sheppard 5-1 in his first round match. Nussbsaum was pinned by Walsh of Lyons in the second round. On Saturday, Christian Nussbaum won two matches in a row to qualify for the blood match. The 220 pounder pinned Williams of Argo in just 51 seconds and then battled to a 6-2 win verses Daum of Marist. In the blood round, Nussbaum got a rematch of the regional final with Uzumecki of Batavia. The home school wrestler was able to pin Nussbaum in the second period. Nussbaum finishes his junior year with a final record of 39-9.

Luc Jandt qualified for the tournament after finishing in second place in the regionals. Jandt was defeated by Fugiel of Glenbard East in the opening round 2-5 and was pinned in the wrestle-backs by Price of Stagg. Jandt ends his senior year with a record of 27-19.

In all, the Redhawks finished with a very respectable 11-7 record in the tournament. Next up Jandt and Hayes will be in Champaign starting Thursday afternoon. The IHSA tournament will continue through Saturday.

Cam Hayes and Jake Keating Compete at IHSA State

February 18-20, 2016

Naperville Central was represented at the IHSA State tournament at the State Farm Center in Champaign Illinois by Cam Hayes and Jake Keating. Hayes, wrestling at 160 pounds, finished 1-2 in the tournament and Keating, 120 pounds, finished 0-1.

Cam Hayes qualified for the tournament by taking 4th place at the Batavia Sectionals. That put him against the sectional champion and 3 seed in the tournament, Max Guhde of Barrington. Hayes was taken down half way through the first period, but escaped and scored a takedown to end the first period up 3-2. Hayes picked down to start the second period and escaped to make the score 4-2. As time expired at the end of the second period, Hayes added another takedown to move up 6-2. Guhde battled back in the third period, scoring an escape close to 6-3 and then a takedown with about 30 second to go to make the score 6-5. After an intentional release by Guhde the score moved to 7-5, and that’s how it ended. Hayes was able to hold off a late attempt at a takedown by Guhde to advance to the quarterfinals.

In the quarters, Hayes faced DVC foe Tom Czernek of Glenbard North. After a scoreless first period, Hayes opened the second period with an escape point. Czernek was able to score a key takedown in the second period and rode Hayes out for a 2-1 lead. Czernek picked down and scored an escape to make the score 3-1. Hayes battled valiantly in the third period and earned a penalty point due to stalling by Czernek, but it wasn’t enough. Czernek added another takedown in the final seconds as Hayes committed himself to find a final point. Final score 5-2. Tom Czernek finished the tournament in 5th place.

In the wrestle-backs, Hayes took on Kyle Thompson of Granite City. After another scoreless first period, Thompson won the toss and elected to pick the down position. He escaped and scored a late takedown to take a 3-0 lead into the third period. Hayes chose down and scored an escape to make the score 3-1. Hayes scored a late third period takedown to tie the score at 3-3, but was unable to hold Thompson down. Thompson scored a quick escape and, after an injury time-out, held on to win 4-3. The loss for Hayes, ends his fantastic career as a Redhawk with a very impressive 77-34 career record.

Jake Keating squared off with Abdullah Assaf of Lockport in the opening round. Keating opened the match impressively with a takedown but Assaf quickly escaped and scored a takedown to finish the first period. Assaf chose down and escaped quickly for a 4-2 lead. After another escape and takedown Assaf increased his lead to 7-4. Keating battled for a takedown to close the gap, but was taken down to his back. Assaf added another takedown as eventually pinned Keating at the 5:44 mark. Assaf finished the tournament in 5th place. Keating was eliminated from the tournament when Assaf was defeated by the eventual state champ Jason Renteria of OPRF in the second round (16-4). Keating, a junior, will attempt to qualify for state for a third time next year.
