I. Rules, Expectations, Attendance, and Eligibility

All wrestlers will follow the rules of the team AT ALL TIMES. Many of these rules apply even during the off-season.

A. The use of Unauthorized Drugs, Alcohol, Steroids or Tobacco will not be tolerated. We cannot achieve our goals if we distract our bodies with altering substances. Substance abuse issues will be handled as defined in the athletic code.

B. You attend Naperville Central High School for an education. Any misbehavior during school will also be dealt with by your coach. All discipline problems are defined in the student handbook. Examples include:

1. Cutting classes

2. Cutting school

3. Tardiness

4. Disrupting classes

5. Disobeying teachers, etc.

C. Wrestlers will follow the rules governing the sport. You will be expected to show proper sportsmanship at all times.

D. Attendance Requirements

1. School is dismissed at 3:10 pm - practice will officially start at 3:35 pm.

2. Practices will run through Thanksgiving and Winter Break. All wrestlers are required to attend practice at this time, except the freshman may have some time optional time off during Winter Break. Please plan your vacations accordingly. It is extremely important that we have successful training during this time. While other schools rest, the Redhawks become contenders.

3. Wrestlers are asked to make a commitment to the team and to manage their time and studies. There are two types of absences, excused and unexcused

It should be kept in mind the above attendance policies are in the best interest of the team. Although it is clear that we attend Naperville Central High School for an education, students must learn that managing their time is an important life skill. Student-athletes are expected to excel in both the classroom and on the mat. In order for our team to be successful, we need perfect attendance. For this reason, even excused absences may carry consequences.

Note: the order and level and length at each level will depend on the type and length of the infraction. Coaches will make every effort to correlate the consequence to the infraction. The following might provide some examples:

Example 1: wrestler missing the first 5 minutes of practice because he was taking a test and he has a note from the teacher. Consequence: none

Example 2: wrestler was with girlfriend and is late to practice 5 minutes without a note. Consequence (first infraction): 5 extra sprints at the end of practice

Example 3: wrestler will miss one practice due to a religious gathering. Consequence: none

Example 4: wrestler missing the 3rd practice in the last three weeks due to a dentist appointment, field trip, and tutoring after school. Consequence: wrestler must make up a practice with a before school workout or several after school workouts.

Example 5: wrestler is involved in a club that meets every Tuesday after school and can’t come to practice on those days. Consequence: wrestler can not be part of the team those until club activities are over.

Example 6: wrestler skips practice, 1st time: Consequence: wrestler is suspended from competition until practice is made up.

Example 7: wrestler will miss 5 winter practices due to family Christmas vacation. Consequence: wrestler is pulled from any competitions for 5 days starting with the first competition upon returning.

5. The first official practice by IHSA guidelines is Monday, November 8th. Wrestling does conclude until the state wrestling tournament on the third weekend in February or the dual team state on the last weekend in February. Wrestling wishing to be excused from the team early and remain in good standing (i.e. receive post-season recognition) must meet with the coach.

6. We conclude Duals and Tournaments with a team meeting. We will “break-it out” then wrestlers are officially dismissed to the bus. Wrestlers may go home with their parents or guardians only, provided that they give a note to the coach before leaving. Wrestlers may not go home with, brothers, sisters, parents of other wrestlers, etc. If a wrestler has been eliminated from a tournament, he is expected to stay through the end of the tournament.

E. Eligibility Requirements.

Eligibility sheets are sent to your teachers weekly during wrestling season. Anyone failing two courses will not be eligible to participate for that week. Anyone failing two courses for the semester will be ineligible for the following semester. Athletic eligibility is defined by the Naperville Central Athletic Code Booklet in the NCHS Student Handbook.

Requirements:

1. Physical Exam

2. Notice of Insurance / Parent Permission Form / Signed IHSA notice of steroid testing

3. Athletic Fee

F. Wrestlers are asked to dress and act appropriately while attending duals and tournaments. Please remember that your behavior is a reflection of yourself, your team, your coaches, your school, and your community.

1. On away meets, you are expected arrive to the bus with all of your gear, including perhaps food, ready to wrestle. You are expected to represent yourself with good behavior at the wrestling site and on the bus.

2. For home duals and tournaments, you are expected to arrive prior to the scheduled time to set up for the match (move mats, tape, mop, etc) and you are expected to stay until after the end of the competition to clean up from the event, (mats, etc.)

3. At dual meets, you are expected to stay on the bench, cheering your teammates, unless you are warming up for your match. Use of music devices, electronic games, or cell phones on the team bench is prohibited [note: using a music device to warm up for your match may be permitted].

4. At tournaments, you are expected to stay until the end of the tournament. You should be with the team unless warming up for your match.

5. During weigh-ins, you will line up as a team, in weight order, in your singlet (no socks). You will be checked for hair, nails and any communicable skin disorders during weigh-ins.

6. Wrestlers are not excused from any event until the coach breaks out the team at the conclusion of the event, unless special circumstances apply.

G. IHSA Weight Certification

The establishment of a minimum weight class is based on a body fat measurement of 7% for male wrestlers and 12% for female wrestlers.

A weight loss of 1.5% of a wrestler’s total body weight per week has been established. A wrestler will not be allowed to wrestle at the minimum weight until the date specified on the body fat results sheet provided by the IHSA.

A wrestler may not weigh in more than one weight class above the lowest weight class that he/she has ever weighed in at. If they do weigh in more than one weight class above the lowest weight that they have ever weighed in at, that wrestler will be re-certified at the higher weight class for the remainder of the season and will not be able to weigh in or wrestle at a lower weight.

For more details on the IHSA Weight Certification program, see Diet and Weight Control in this playbook.
