Check out this video about how curves work in Lightroom. Yes, there's a bit of science and technology going on in the first couple of minutes that may not interest many of you, but it's nice to actually understand how the heck channels and curves actually work if you're planning to continue to grow in your edit game. And yes, there are a lot of similarities to how it works in Photoshop, but there are also a few key differences and advantages. Most importantly, there's a setting you have to change to make curves work in Lightroom the same way they do in Photoshop; by default the curves panel is sort of dumbed down into something else. Once you've got it down, do some creative edits using the curves to create at least 3 different photos that are examples of one or combos of the different techniques presented in the video, such as matted out black levels, color toning, or contrast adjustments. Keep them in lightroom until I get back, unless of course you personally want to export them and send them along for whatever personal purpose.

PRACTICE - HELLO DOLLY HEADSHOTS
OLD STUFF BELOW
WATCH: GRADIENT MAPS FOR COLOR GRADING:
When done, color tone at least two images using the techniques. If you need to email a photo to a neighbor so everyone has a photo, or email yourself a photo from your phone, feel free to do so. But EVERYONE needs their own photos to edit/submit.
Step 1:
Visit the links below before proceeding to the directions underneath them.
https://www.photographymad.com/pages/view/lenses
https://newatlas.com/camera-lens-buying-guide/29141/
You will use your knowledge found on the previous pages to create an infographic depicting the different types and characteristics of lenses. These should include at the very least:
Information about the following types of lenses:
- Wide angle, standard, and telephoto (preferably also ultra wide and super telephoto)
- Prime vs zoom
The information on these should discuss the following:
- How each lens differs in terms of focal length (mm)
- How primes vs zooms differ in terms of price, max aperture, and sharpness
You may also look to include info on the following, though they are not required:
- Macro Lenses
- Tilt Shift Lenses
As always, the most important rule is that the sub/guest educator gets mad respect. Err on the side of caution here for one day.
Step 2:
Step 3:
I don't expect these answers to be the most educated, precise things, because most of you don't know much about the difference and uses of these lenses yet. Just... instinctively why are you picking this lens? Your answers might have to do with the fact that you see it has a large range of focal lengths, or maybe just because it appears to be large, a different color than the other lenses, and expensive. Maybe it's a mix of technical/realistic reasons, or maybe it's because of what you think this lens can do or what it looks like even. Don't go out and do a ton of research on these lenses; we'll learn more about lenses, and revisit this for more educated 'purchases.'
Using what things you do know about lenses so far, you have $10,000 to spend buying lenses for your camera. You have to follow these rules:
The biggest key here is that you tell me why you chose the lenses you chose. Your overall response should include at least 1-2 COMPLETE SENTENCES per lens.
Incomplete sentences will result in points off. As your knowledge of lenses and how we use them grows throughout the year, the choices you would make will grow as well. Later on when we do this again, your list will likely look very different.
Know that there aren't correct answers, and you can and will feel confused looking at the different lenses. This is just you shopping around and really seeing what is out there in terms of lenses, and how much they cost. Do make an effort to cover a lot of different scenarios, though!
Don't forget to include the price when you list a lens in your document, as well as the link to the actual lens.
Remember: The link for the lenses can be found at http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/lenses-flashes
Out of stock lenses are fair game. After all, this is imaginary money.
YOU WILL SUBMIT YOUR ASSIGNMENT through your Google Drive Shared folder.
Step 3: Read this article - pick three quotes you like best, and figure out why each of the people who said those quotes are famous (example: George Eastman has
something to do with photography equipment versus photos) . You'll do this on the computer and want to type these in google drive or something, as the quotes, names, and something about why they're famous in photography or art will be submitted digitally for a grade when i get back.
Step 3: If you finish and have time, be quiet. Be peaceful. Do not give the sub issues. I started out as a sub before I was a full-on teacher, and while there are very, very few ways to make me angry, disrespecting a sub is one of them. They have been instructed to let me know who steps out of line. Keep food and drink put away except for water that can close, and talk with classmates to a minimum. Phones should be put away until you are done... Do step 3 using the computer.

AV Production I To-Do Items
1. Check out and complete this tutorial on removing noise from audio. You actually use Audition, Adobe's sound editor, but that can actually be used on video clips as well. note the link for the sample file download is in the video description, or you can just grab it here. You will need to have a finished audio file as an example for a grade to turn in.
2. If you finish that, take some time to watch this video on pay rates for cinematographers.
Stuff below this line is from a previous absence and isn't relevant; I'm just leaving it here for the time being.
Complete the following in the list you see them below. You may have done some already, but several folks are missing one or the other.
1. If for some reason you haven't completed it yet, complete the assignment below on blocking and staging.
2. Watch This video about the history of modern screenplays, taking note of key points along the way in a Google Drive document.
4. If you manage to complete all of this, check out This article on shot lists and lined scripts. Get with any groupmates who are done with 1-3, and read through this process. It's an extremely useful addition to do a lined script in addition to just a shot list,.

ASSIGNMENT: Watch the video above then answer the questions below the link. If you don't have headphones, just watch without. You can even work together to watch and answer:
Answer these questions in a google drive document as you watch. Note the times of the questions as follows, but you'll need to watch the entire video starting at 2:50 for it to make good sense. You can watch the first 3 minutes if you like, and there's relevant stuff in there, just not specific to the major content of the video.
2:50 start watching
4:00 - What are a couple ways the director covers up the flat performances of the actors in this ‘control take?’
4:30 - Why does the director make switches from close-ups to medium shots?
8:00 - How would you describe what he refers to as ‘business,’ and how does he use business to relate to the action taking place in the scene?
9:00 - What was so interesting about how the actors’ changes in eye contact throughout the business cut came into being?
12:30 - What’s the difference in look between the shoulder mount and steadicam?
13:45 - What’s the disadvantage to the brushless motor stabilizer (ours is known as the Movi)?
21:45 - Why does the sitcom take shoot mostly in wide shots?
When you're done, be sure you have the location of your drive document in your shared drive folder. Having problems getting into your drive? Do it on paper if you like, but when I get back you'll need to get it typed and into your drive.
