Gradient Maps and Semi-Transparent Shapes
Create a Project folder in your Photoshop folder titled 'Gradient Map Boroughs.' You will save all original images and .PSD's here. Using ONLY large-size images from Google, you will locate images representing one landmark from each of the five Boroughs of New York City. You will then create a series of photos that are tinted via Gradient Map adjustments (review how to use them here).
Label each photo with two text layers: one will be larger and the name of the Borough, the other smaller and reading 'Boroughs of New York.' These text items will be set upon either a white or black semi-transparent shape. You are limited to Sans-Serif fonts for your choices. If you are not familiar with the difference between Sans Serif and Serif typefaces, you need to learn the difference. Four of them should involve a Normal blending mode, lending a color tint (such as Maroon and White or Black and light blue); the fifth one should involve a blending mode such as Overlay or Soft Light to intensify or SLIGHTLY alter existing colors.
Consider the following workflow:

Putting it all Together - Layer Masks and Gradients
- Cross fade between two photos using a gradient on a layer mask (you can do this in a separate document/file from the design below)
You will create an autumn-inspired design that includes the following technical details:
- Document Size - 7.5 inches by 10 inches (or vice versa), 300 ppi, CMYK color
- Use a brush to create a simple shape (i.e. use the star or leaf brush), then fill it with a gradient you created using any of several methods
- Create a background layer and fill it with a solid color
- Bring in a full photo, then use a layer mask to hide the part of it
- Incorporate text into your design, such as 'Falcon Fall,' or 'Happy Autumn, Bushland!'
- Save your project file in a Photoshop Folder inside of your Graphic Design Folder. Save it in the following formats:
