Basics of Typography, Part II, and Creating a Font Flag

Before proceeding, do be aware of your Basics of Typography assignment that is mentioned in the previous post, as well as the amended due date (due to our technical difficulties).

Next, keep in mind the following from that blog/page:

• Letters and letterforms are not the same thing. While the former is the concept of a letter in general (such as the letter 'A'), the latter is a specific version of that letter created by someone. The letterform 'A' in Comic Sans is different than the letterform 'A' in Arial, but both are the letter 'A.'
• There are many glyphs/letterforms that are not part of the standard letters we consider when writing with the alphabet we use day to day. These are accessible via the glyphs panel in Illustrator.
• Every typeface/font has a different set of glyphs.

That being said, head over to http://layersmagazine.com/using-the-glyphs-panel-in-illustrator.html and follow the directions to create a typography monster. Use various colors in a monochromatic scheme for your design; this can include whites, blacks, and greys as well. If you are stuck and can't seem to come up with a worthwhile concept, Keep in mind (but don't adhere strictly to) the following ideas:

• P's and L's make great feet
• C's and V's make great hands/claws, and can be combined in multiples of one another (3 or 4 v's slightly rotated = multiple fingers)
• O's or a pair of D's make great heads. Consider using other letters to create a head with horns!
