These videos, along with any notes you had taken previously, should help you get going on the worksheet found at the bottom of the page (titled "Understanding Resolution"). If you don't Microsoft Publisher at home, then get a copy from me when you return. You should be able to open it in a browser window, though, and print it.

How Image Resolution Affects Print Quality

REMEMBER:

• The resolution (ppi) of a file affects how it appears when printed, but has nothing to do with how it appears on a screen. That is the result of the resolution (ppi) of the display in relation to the pixel dimensions (width and height) of the image file.
• Pixels contain ONE AND ONLY ONE color at a given time, and they are either completely filled with that color or have none at all (black).
• Pixels on a display are made up of red, green, and blue sub-pixels that each shine together at a different intensity to create all the colors we see.
• If you don't know the pixel dimensions (width or height), resolution (ppi), or print dimensions, you can use the following to calculate it:
  • Pixel Dimensions (width or height) = Resolution x Print Dimensions - and solve for the one item you are missing.

Standard and High Definition Resolutions

For Tuesday, you need to know the following:

High Definition involves two different sets of pixel dimensions:

• 1080p or 1080i (you don't need to know the difference between these yet), which measure at 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high
• 720p, which measures at 1280x720 pixels

Standard Definition, aka 480p, which came before HD, was 640 x 480 pixels.

We express the relationship between width and height using an aspect ratio. For HD, it is 16:9. For SD, it's 4:3. You can determine aspect ratio by writing the pixel dimensions as a fraction (width/height) and reducing it.

REMEMBER: You also need to figure out the pixel dimensions for wide screen Standard Definition, such as widescreen DVD's.
