Multi-track recording project
DIRECTIONS:
We have said that Audacity can be used to create multi-track recordings. This can be achieved via recording multiple channels at a time and placing them into their own tracks, or by recording one channel at a time and assembling the tracks together. We are going this route.
• You will be recording in groups of 2-3 people. For every person in your group, there needs to be THREE tracks recorded in your audio file (example: 2 people = 6 tracks). EVERYONE must record at least two tracks; however, NO INDIVIDUAL may record more than five. You don’t have to make vocal sounds, either. See the next bullet.
• Consider a number of sounds to place into your music file. It may be tapping on the desk at a rhythm, repeating a word such as your first or last name (no drug/sex/racist etc. related content is the key to passing!), or making some silly sound.
• Begin recording by simply hitting the record button and having at it.
• When you are done, hit the STOP button.
• When the next person is ready to record, put the headphones on them and let them give the track a listen. Then, move the playhead back to the start and hit the record button. The audio will play back, so they can use it to place their sounds in rhythm with the others. WATCH THE WAVES to PLACE YOUR SOUNDS!
• Repeat the process to meet the track requirement.
When you are finished, Save this project to the flash drives/documents of each and every group member. Each member will be responsible for composing THEIR OWN 'song' out of the tracks you recorded.
• If things are slightly off, give the following tools a try:
Selection Tool: Used to click & drag over part of a track to select it. You can use this tool to then cut, copy, or paste sections of audio into other tracks or new tracks altogether.
Time Shift Tool: Once you move a selection or record part of a track, can be used to move that area forwards/backwards in time. Use this to drag a sound into the perfect spot between other sounds, making for a better rhythm!
Envelope Tool: Can be used to place points at which you can fade volume levels in and out. Click once on the waveform to set a point, then position the pointers over one of the outer endpoints and drag inward or outward. You can set as many points as you like!
NOTE: Try making a single sound, then copy/paste it multiple times to create a steady rhythm!
YOUR AUDIO FILE MUST BE AT LEAST 30 SECONDS LONG!
Points will be taken off if you do not pay attention to levels and as a result have distorted audio!

Fades and the Envelope Tool
Working in groups, you will practice use of the envelope tool. To do so, you will use the following:

Working in groups again, you will learn to use the trim, silence, and time shift tools.

Basics of Audio
Working in groups, use the Word document at the bottom of the page named 'Audacity Guide' to learn the basics of working with Audacity. When you are done, create a small, multi-track recording that does the following:
